Sonoma County Library Posts Dream Job

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016 Sonoma County Library posted a job opening for a Wine Librarian, and by 1:00 pm the following day, the word had spread to over 40,000 people through the library’s Facebook page and other media channels.

Comments on the Library’s Facebook page (facebook.com/sonomalibrary) ranged from “My dream job” to “Now I’m on a search for someone hiring a Beer Librarian.”

“Sonoma County Library’s Wine Librarian opening is a great example of the strong partnerships the library has built in the past and, as part of our newly adopted Strategic Plan initiatives, plans to build in the future with our community,” said Brett Lear, Director, Sonoma County Library.

The Wine Library’s collection of periodicals, books and subscriptions to agricultural databases, housed in its own room in the Healdsburg Regional Library, was established in partnership with the information needs of the growers and producers in the area during the industry’s market growth in the 1970s and 1980s. Bo Simons, the first Wine Librarian, managed the growing collection for over twenty years, building and maintaining relationships with growers and producers.

Jon Haupt, Wine Librarian from 2012-2015 who is now the Healdsburg Regional Library’s Branch Manager, is looking forward to working with the soon-to-be-hired fourth Wine Librarian. “The Wine Library has an international reputation as a leading provider of wine information resources. The library is rich in historical literature (dating back to 1514) and new material alike. One aspect that makes us special among wine libraries is our historically close relationships with local industry organizations. I’m looking forward to helping the next Wine Librarian carry on the special relationship Sonoma County Library has with our wine community.”

When asked about the possibility of the library adding a Beer Librarian to its staff, Brett Lear, Director, Sonoma County Library, said “While we do not have any immediate plans to add a Beer Librarian, with Russian River Brewing Companyas a neighbor to our Central Branch location and the growth of the beer industry in Sonoma County overall, it might be something to pursue in the future in partnership with the beer industry!”
