Position Announcement

Position Title: Restoration Intern

Introduction: The employer is the Board of Directors of the Solano Resource Conservation District (SRCD), and day to day supervision will be under the Executive Director. The title of the position is Restoration Intern.

The position is temporary, part-time, and non-exempt (hourly). Medical, dental and vision benefits are not provided. Employment at the SRCD is employment at-will. Employment at-will may be terminated with or without cause and with or without notice at any time by the employee or the District.

Location: The home office for this position is at 1170 North Lincoln Street, Suite 110, Dixon, CA 95620. Field duties will occur on agricultural and wildland properties all over Solano County. Applicants must provide their own transportation from their home to the office; transportation between the office and field sites will usually be in a SRCD vehicle.

Term of Work: The Restoration Intern position is seasonal, with a start date in early January 2018 and an end date in mid June 2018.

This position consists of a two full eight hour work days each week. Occasional Saturday work may also be available. The scheduling of which days of the week are internship work days is flexible, allowing for individuals’ school schedules.

Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction of a Restoration Project Manager and/or a Restoration Field Technician, the Restoration Intern will participate in the implementation and maintenance of various habitat restoration projects in Solano County. This includes:

·  Mowing, weed-wacking and applying herbicides to control invasive weeds

·  Propagating and planting native plants

·  Installing and operating irrigation systems

·  Working with hired and volunteer work crews

On-the-job training will be provided to the Restoration Intern for all technical habitat restoration activities. Applicant must be able to work as a team member and also independently at project sites.

Projects include grassland, riparian and wetland habitat restoration, hedgerows and vegetated canals, and farm and ranch ponds.

Qualifications: SRCD is looking for college undergraduate or graduate students who have taken classes in environmental science, ecology, botany or biology, and who are interested in the field of restoration ecology. The Restoration Intern should have experience working with native plants and wildland weeds. Previous experience operating ATVs, weed-wackers and backpack sprayers is desired, but not required.

Applicant must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Applicant must have the ability work outdoors in wildland settings, which may include exposure to insects and wildlife, temperature extremes, and inclement weather.

Applicant should be a team player with an ability to work with staff, board members, local landowners and volunteers who have a diverse range of backgrounds, motivations and interests. A valid driver’s license and liability insurance is required.

Compensation: $15.00/hour
