SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Lisbon: May 27-28, 2011

Call for papers

This seminar is the first of its kind and it is with excitement and pleasure we invite representatives from the two disciplines – sociology and social work to discuss common interests. Many sociologists focus on social problems in their research and social workers bridge the practical to the analytical aspects in their work. The papers will discuss the relationships between sociology and social work. Today sociology and social work are two separate disciplines. However, in many parts of the world they have a common origin. There has been segregation since early 20th century from social work being the clinical or applied part of sociology to becoming a separate field. This segregation is also connected to a gender dimension. In this seminar we would like papers analyzing and discussing the origin of sociology as well as the origin of social work. What are their common grounds and their different historical development?

The seminar will also relate to the current situation in different parts of the world. What characterizes sociology and social work today? What type of parallels, differences and links can we see? And how are the collaborations, forms and contents?

We invite papers also to discuss types of development that we foresee in the future. Are there any trends? How can the two disciplines benefit from each other? Are there any reasons for not having collaboration between sociology and social work? Can sociology and social work become too similar that both disciplines will lose their own characteristics? The seminar is also open for other related disciplines.
