Skin Model- Lab Sheet

Your skin performs important functions that allow you to live a normal life, you might not notice it happening but you can be sure your skin is doing its part to keep your body healthy. There are many functions happening where you cannot see. To get to understand the skin better you will be creating a model of the skin and all its parts using clay.

Materials:

Modeling clay in multiple colors: pink, red, yellow, tan, brown, blue, white, gray

11 toothpics with small labels attached

Directions:

  1. Gather necessary materials required for lab. Keep these materials on your desk.
  2. Take a small piece of tan clay and lay it out on your desk
  3. Then attatch below it another layer of red clay
  4. Attach below it a larger piece of pink clay
  5. And the bottom place a larger piece of yellow clay
  6. Flatten somewhat on desk so that it looks like this:

  1. Using the created layers as the base, add on top a sweat gland using the gray clay. Make a squiggly gland and make sure it goes through all layers.
  1. Explain why this gland is important

  1. Using the brown clay create a hair and place correctly on the model.
  1. Using pink clay surround bottom of hair to show follicle.
  1. Using red and pink clay create the tiny muscle and place it into the model.
  1. Using the white clay create a nerve type structure with

nerve endings and add it to the model.

  1. Explain why nerves in the skin are important.

  1. Using yellow clay add in oil gland (also known as sebaceous gland) to the model. Make sure placement is near hair as shown.
  1. Add in red and blue blood vessels through the model to show blood flow.
  1. Take each toothpick and label all parts of the 3 demensional model.
  1. Explain the importance of each part of the skin as you label.
