Simon writes.....13th May 2015

At the time of writing this tomorrow (Thursday 14th May) is Ascension Day. In Acts we are told that, after his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples over the next 40 days (giving them proof that he had risen from the dead and speaking about the kingdom of God). The time came for Jesus to return to the Father and so.....

When Jesus had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. (Luke 24:50-53)

Jesus had died on the cross, risen from the grave and was now ascended to sit at the right hand of the Father in heaven...... as the old hymn puts it Jesus is now ‘risen, ascended, glorified’! We need to Ascension to complete the work of Jesus on earth. He is now the God who overcame death and prays for us in heaven. We worship not a dead god but rather the one who has conquered death and is glorified! Alleluia!

The Ascension reminds us that our real (eternal) home is not this earth but rather we are followers of the one who lives for evermore in heaven. We are drawn to that place with him and Jesus’ Ascension should be, for us, a cause of great celebration and worship. As we sing on Sunday...Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other......
