Signature Applications and Process – Incoming 8th Graders ONLY

November

8th Grade Career Expo: 11/3 and 11/4 - Reno/Sparks Convention Center

Parent Night (Passport 2 High School) Recruitment nights from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the following locations:

·  11/15 – Summit Mall – Unit 624 (Next to Orvis)

·  11/17 – Boys and Girls @ Foster Drive

·  11/21 – TMCC Dandini Campus

·  11/29 – Sparks Rec- Richards Way in Sparks

November 1st:

Applications Available On-Line

Students who do not have current standardized tests, such as MAPs, will be assessed using the Gates-McGinitie reading test and an Algebra readiness test (approved through C&I), administered during scheduled dates through the SA-CTE office – beginning in November.

November 1st:

Projected Enrollment for each Signature Academy provided to Allocation Committee

Based on available past application/enrollment data and reasonable targets

January 1st:

General Application Due (to determine minimum eligibility) with Choice Ranking

ü  2.0 GPA in 7th grade and first semester 8th grade CORE CLASSES (English, Math, Science)

ü  Attainment of grade level scores on 7th grade and first semester 8th grade Reading and Math MAP test (or standardized tests)

ü  Regular school attendance (90%, all reasons included)

ü  Demonstration of appropriate self-management abilities (no discipline events)

**Student must maintain all eligibility through S2 of 8th grade

Assessment of Applications (blind screening for eligibility, followed by secondary screening of those students within 10% of eligibility)

504/IEP/ELL placement meetings held at middle schools

January 20th:

Letter of Eligibility (or ineligibility) – choice change by February 3rd

February 8th:

Conduct any necessary lotteries. Only 25% of accepted students can be on a signature variance. Some schools will have a wait list of zoned students and a wait list for variance students.

February 13th:

Common Letter of Acceptance/Wait List – 5 days from receipt to return

ü  Student Acceptance form enclosed w/ return due date

ü  One-year commitment (only allowed to switch academies if on a 1st choice wait list)

ü  Signature variance form (if applicable)

February 22nd (at the latest):

Final Lists Prepared for School Sites and sent to the District

(Note: 504/IEP/ELL students will be conditional until transition meetings have taken place. This must be completed prior to the end of the year.)

After February 22nd, Individual Schools Should:

Pick up accepted students in IC (except designated 504/IEP/ELL students);

Send out Welcome & Orientation Information

**Schools should NOT try to convince students to stay in their zoned school if they have signed a commitment to another program

Mid June

Registrars will be sent all the one year commitment forms and signed variances along with a current list of students who have been accepted into the academy as an incoming freshman. These students need to be flagged on IC prior to the second week of school.

For Applications Received after the Deadline

All incoming 9th grade applications MUST come through the District process

Late Registration on-line Application will be posted January 8th and closed March 1st (message on the site)

Same process as above, depending on space

**If a program is full, eligible students will be placed at the bottom of the wait list**

This process will continue through the third week of the new school year, for incoming 9th graders only!
