Scientific Advisor to the Nature Conservation Sector, Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA). Advise the Sector on technical issues concerning natural resource management and nature conservation, as well as act as the scientific advisor to the Zaranik Protected Area in North Sinai.

Coordinator of Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Egypt project. BirdLife International Producing a directory of important bird areas in Egypt.

Coordinator of TortoiseCare. Overseeing a captive breeding and reintroduction project for the globally threatened, Egyptian Tortoise Testudo kleinmanni.

Scientific Achievements

Described three new species to science, the Nile Delta Toad Bufo Kassasii (1993), the Qattara Gecko Tarentola mindiae (1997) and Acanthodactuylus beershibenses (1999).

Publications

Published over 50 papers and articles in scientific and amateur journals. Co-authored three books on the avifauna of Egypt, Directory of Important Bird Areas in Egypt, 1999; The Birds of Egypt, 1989, Oxford University Press, and Common Birds of Egypt, 1985, American University in Cairo Press, and contributed a chapter on reptiles for a book about the wildlife of Abu Dhabi.
