JUST FOR FUN

Lot’s Wife

The Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted, “My Mommy looked back once while she was driving,” he announced triumphantly, “And she turned into a telephone pole!”

Good Samaritan

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class, “If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?” A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, “I think I'd throw up.”

Did Noah Fish?

A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark?” “No,” replied Johnny. “How could he, with just two worms.”

Higher Power

A Sunday school teacher said to her children, “We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But, there is a Higher Power. Can anybody tell me what it is?” One child blurted out, “Aces!”

Punny

“She was only a whisky-maker, but he loved her still.”

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM CONTINUED

·  ~ 400 species of amphibians, ALL endemic

·  ~ 420 species of reptiles, 92% endemic

·  Saw more snakes than all previous foreign trips combined

The land is mostly bare because it was stripped for firewood and converted into rice paddies.

Of the flora and fauna, Jerry noted these highlights:

·  Lemur families (all endemic)

·  Many Chameleons and Geckos

·  Several Bird families (Vangas, Asitys, Mesites, etc.)

·  Five of nine species of Baobab trees are endemic, one also occurs in Africa.

·  85% of flora are endemic

Anyone who knows Jerry knows his primary reason for the visit was to learn about and photograph Madagascar’s bird population. Of 283 bird species, 37 genera and 109 species are endemic. However, many endemics are now extinct, such as the Elephant Bird. At right is a photo of a Sickle-Billed Vanga.

The map that accompanies this article shows how Jerry crisscrossed the island, by plane and bus. In starting the tour, he flew from Paris to Reunion, a French island east of Madagascar; then flew to

Maroansetra, and then took a boat to the Masoala Peninsula. Shades of Gilligan’s Island: What should have been a two-hour trip took twice as long. “It was a rough trip,” Jerry said. “Everyone was sick at one point or another.”
