Sixth Grade Science

Important Information for Parents and Students

Hello students and parents,

Welcome to a new school year. I am Mr. Wegley your new Science teacher and I am looking forward to a great year of learning.

Contact Information- My preferred means of communication is email. I will also send out periodic email, so please check and make sure your contact information is correct on PowerSchool. And I will put assignments and information on my web page through the district. It can be found by going to the Walnut Springs home page, Teacher Web Sites (found on the left hand side.)

Textbooks- Students do not have their own science textbook. We will be using classroom sets of multiple books throughout the year. Students can also check out a textbook from the library, and if all the copies are gone from the library I will find one for them.

Materials- a one inch science binder, notebook filler paper, log book and writing utensils.

Curriculum- Here is a list of the major topics we will be learning about:

·  Laboratory Safety

·  Cells – organelles, mitosis, organization of living things, osmosis, and diffusion

·  Living systems – symmetry, dissection, and types of tissues

·  Matter – atoms, elements, compounds, and mixtures

·  Energy – potential, kinetic, sound, thermal, and electrical

·  Motion – force and average speed

·  Minerals – luster, streak, hardness, magnetism, etc.

·  Rocks – igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary

·  Soil – composition, permeability, and porosity

Grading

·  All points will come from assessments. (tests, quizzes, projects, and some labs)

·  Assessments can be retaken within 2 weeks of when the assessments has been return and once the student has shown they have restudied the material.

Homework

·  Homework is only given when necessary.

·  Due dates will be given when homework is assigned.

·  Students will have to make up incomplete homework assignments.
