Title: “The Work Of The Holy Spirit” Part 1”

Scripture: John 14 and others

Introduction: “The Holy Spirit is the best kept secret in Christianity mostly because His purpose and role have been misunderstood. The Holy Spirit is not a grand show master who makes it possible for you to do really cool stuff, or at least appear really cool so people are impressed.
The Holy Spirit actually works in the background, like the bios of your computer. You never see it but you know it’s there and without that Basic Input Output System your computer wouldn’t be able to do anything. And the Holy Spirit works for one purpose, to bring glory to God, glory to Jesus and not necessary glory to you.
The Holy Spirit is a foretaste of heaven. He is the beginning of what it is like to live in God and have God live in us.”

Text: John 14
Throughout the centuries there have been debates and misunderstandings concerning the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Some think of The Holy Spirit as an “it”, an impersonal being or a “divine force.” He is neither. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity—just as much God as the Father and the Son.

Gregory of Nazianzus writes, “The deity of the Holy Spirit ought to be clearly recognized in Scripture. Look at these facts: Christ is born; the Spirit is His forerunner. Christ is baptized; the Spirit bears witness. Christ is tempted; the Spirit leads Him up. Christ ascends; the Spirit takes His place. What great things are there in the character of God which are not found in the Spirit? What titles which belong to God are not also applied to Him? He is called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the mind of Christ, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of adoption, of truth, of liberty; the Spirit of wisdom, of understanding, of counsel, of might, of knowledge, of godliness, of the fear of God. This only begins to show how unlimited He is. --www.sermonillustrations.com/a-z

What Did Jesus say about Who the Holy Spirit and what he would accomplish in our lives???

Let’s look at the various works of the Holy Spirit that Jesus told us that He would accomplish in our lives.

1. Jesus Is Going To The Father To Send The Holy

Spirit So That We Can Do Greater Things Than What

Jesus Did!

A. Jehovah Witness Came To My Door.

B. Do you think that we can do greater things than what

Jesus Even Did? (We don’t think so!)

C. Do you Believe In the Bible?

Scripture: John 14:12 – “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”

D. “We are going to have to go back and talk this over!”

Page 2

2. It All Starts With A Relationship With Jesus!

John 14:15 – “If you love me, you will obey what I command”

A. It all starts with a relationship with Jesus.

1. Are You Saved?

2. Acts 2:21..“Everyone who calls on the name of the

Lord shall be saved!”

B. This verse “If you love me, you will obey what I

command”, could sound like a “rules based religion”

C. It’s Not!

D. But loving Jesus means becoming like Jesus.

E. Becoming like Jesus means thinking and acting like he

thinks and acts.

F. “In simple terms, loving God and obeying his

commandments...which are.. Loving God and loving

others!
3. Jesus Promises To Ask The Father! He Will Send A

Counselor, The Spirit Of Truth To Be Here Forever And You Know

Him!!!

Scripture: John 14:16 – “And I will ask the Father, and

he will give you another Counselor to be with

you forever”
A. The Father would send another (another of the same

sort, not “different” heteros) counselor,

1. suggests that Jesus was the first counselor.

2. Counselor... The Greek parakletos means “called to

one’s side”. It was used in a court to mean a legal

assistant or a counsel for the defense, an advocate.

It denotes someone who comes alongside to care

at the appropriate time.

B. vs. 17a “the Spirit of truth” The world cannot

accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows

him.”

C. Who Is The Holy Spirit??? “The Spirit Of Truth”

1. “The world cannot accept him, the spirit of truth,

because it neither sees him nor knows him.

2. The truth depends on who you talk to.

3. Fox News, MSNBC, CBS, Argus Leader

4. John 14:6 “I am the way, THE TRUTH and the life.”

5. The Holy Spirit... The World May Not Accept Him,

But he is the “Spirit of Truth“

D. John 14:17b But you know him, for he lives with

you and will be in you.”

1. Before we became Christians we knew right

from wrong!

2. “But you know him, for he lives with you..”

3. Holy Spirit...Always prompting us to think right,

Do right, Be right!

4. “And will be in you.”

5. Desire of the Holy Spirit not just to live with

you but be in you.”

Example: John Langdon – Invite Jesus into Play

blizzarding snow. Near their blind.

c. Looked for it couldn’t find it!

d. waited until spring.

g. Squirrel... something is gnawing on me, got to

get out of the car and go out there.

h. walked down the road, 150 feet, bent over

and picked up John’s knife.

i. John explained to Squirrel what that “gnawing

was... The Holy Spirit!

j. Holy Spirit just doesn’t want to be “with you,

but in you.”

4. Not Orphans Because The Spirit Of God, Spirit Of Christ,

The Holy Spirit Lives In Us!

A. He’s Going But He’s Not!

Scripture: John 14: 18– “I will not leave you as orphans; I will

Come to you.”

1. He’s Going But He’s Not!

a. Jesus ascended but sent the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit

to be with us!

b. Jesus said, I will never leave you or forsake you...

c. Why? Because the Spirit of Christ, The Holy Spirit is

with us!

2. The World Doesn’t See Him but We Do!

Scripture: John 14: 19a “Before long, the world will not

See me anymore, but you will see me.”

a. (The World Will think you are crazy!)

b. Lost my blue pants, looked for them.. finally saw I was

wearing them!

c. The world may not see a physical Jesus but we see the

Holy Spirit, The Spirit of Christ Who Reveals Jesus to

us!

3. Not Only See Him But We Live Forever!

Scripture: John 14:19b –vs. 20.. Because I live, you also will

live. Vs. 20 On that day...(Today he wants us to

realize that I am in my father, and you are in me,

and I am in you.”

a. all of it adds up to: Jesus is in God the Father and We Are

In Jesus and His Holy Spirit lives in us!

b. We Can Expect The Activities Of The Person Of Jesus To

Be Around Us Because The Holy Spirit Lives In Us!?!?!

Page 5
