Position Description

SUMMARY:Teaches environmental education, environmental science, character and outdoor education to Maryland school students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

1. Responsible for the safety of 20-40 children in an outdoor, sometimes remote setting.

2. Effectively teach students from various school districts MSDE approved curricula in environmental education, environmental science, character and outdoor education.

3. Mentor and coach more junior staff members

4. Develop and grow various parts of the education program to include, but not limited to Follow-on, lesson and curriculum development, green schools, school yard habitat, back country excursions, aquaculture, and other special projects.

5. Participate in animal care responsibilities.

6. Participate in various camp maintenance activities.

7. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Educators shouldhave a bachelor’s degree in outdoor education, environmental or natural science, education, art, social studies language arts, or related fields. Educators must love students and must be open to new teaching methods and practices. Educators must be teachable. Educators must be flexible, team players.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in outdoor education, environmental or natural science, education, art, social studies language arts, or related fields preferred. Teaching or other youth program experience preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Strong communication skills required, both verbal and written. Must be an excellent communicator.

The job functions of this position require that educators be in the outdoors in all weather including but not limited to rain, snow sleet, high wind, cold, heat, and may be exposed to biting and/or stinging insects to include but not limited to ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, flies and bees. Extensive walking and standing is required of this position.
