Lead-free statement: Several plumbing fixtures described in this section fall under jurisdiction of the Federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act (42 USG 300G) which mandates that effective January 4, 2014 the wetted surfaces of any valve, fitting or fixture that comes in contact with potable water must have a weighted-average lead content of no more than 0.25 percent. 1.3DEFINITIONS

1.6QUALITY ASSURANCE

  2. Steel Piping Welding:Qualify processes and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code:SectionIX, "Welding and Brazing Qualifications."

  4. Certify that each welder has passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved and that certification is current.

1.7DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Deliver pipes and tubes with factory-applied end caps.Maintain end caps through shipping, storage, and handling to prevent pipe end damage and to prevent entrance of dirt, debris, and moisture.
  2. Store plastic pipes protected from direct sunlight.Support to prevent sagging and bending.

1.8COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate installation of required supporting devices and set sleeves in poured-in-place concrete and other structural components as they are constructed.
  2. Coordinate installation of identifying devices after completing covering and painting if devices are applied to surfaces.
  3. Coordinate size and location of concrete bases.Formwork, reinforcement, and concrete requirements are specified in [Section033000 "Cast-in-Place Concrete."] [Section033053 "Miscellaneous Cast-in-Place Concrete."].

2.1PIPING JOINING MATERIALS

  1. Pipe-Flange Gasket Materials:Suitable for chemical and thermal conditions of piping system contents.
  2. ASMEB16.21, nonmetallic, flat, asbestos free, 1/8-inch (3.2-mm) maximum thickness, unless otherwise indicated.
  3. Full-Face Type:For flat-face, Class125, cast-iron and cast-bronze flanges.
  4. Narrow-Face Type:For raised-face, Class250, cast-iron and steel flanges.
  5. AWWAC110, rubber, flat face, 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) thick, unless otherwise indicated; and full-face or ring type, unless otherwise indicated.
  6. Flange Bolts and Nuts:ASMEB18.2.1, carbon steel, unless otherwise indicated.
  7. Plastic, Pipe-Flange Gasket, Bolts, and Nuts:Type and material recommended by piping system manufacturer, unless otherwise indicated.
  8. Solder Filler Metals:ASTMB32, lead-free alloys.Include water-flushable flux according to ASTMB813.
  9. Brazing Filler Metals:AWSA5.8, BCuPSeries, copper-phosphorus alloys for general-duty brazing, unless otherwise indicated; and AWSA5.8, BAg1, silver alloy for refrigerant piping, unless otherwise indicated.
  10. Welding Filler Metals:Comply with AWSD10.12/D10.12M for welding materials appropriate for wall thickness and chemical analysis of steel pipe being welded.

2.4SLEEVES

  1. Mechanical sleeve seals for pipe penetrations are specified in Section220517 "Sleeves and Sleeve Seals for Plumbing Piping."
  2. Galvanized-Steel Sheet Sleeves:0.0239-inch (0.6-mm) minimum thickness; round tube closed with welded longitudinal joint.
  3. Steel Pipe Sleeves:ASTMA53/A53M, TypeE, GradeB, Schedule40, galvanized, plain ends.

Sleeves in paragraph below are available with many end variations.

  1. Cast-Iron Sleeves:Cast or fabricated "wall pipe" equivalent to ductile-iron pressure pipe, with plain ends and integral waterstop, unless otherwise indicated.

PVC sleeves in first two paragraphs below may be prohibited by fire authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Molded PVC Sleeves:Permanent, with nailing flange for attaching to wooden forms.
  2. PVC Pipe Sleeves:ASTMD1785, Schedule40.
  3. Molded PE Sleeves:Reusable, PE, tapered-cup shaped, and smooth outer surface with nailing flange for attaching to wooden forms.

2.5IDENTIFICATION DEVICES

  1. General:Products specified are for applications referenced in other utilities Sections.If more than single type is specified for listed applications, selection is Installer's option.
  2. Equipment Nameplates:Metal permanently fastened to equipment with data engraved or stamped.
  3. Data:Manufacturer, product name, model number, serial number, capacity, operating and power characteristics, labels of tested compliances, and essential data.
  4. Location:Accessible and visible.

Delete paragraph and subparagraphs below if stencils are not required, or edit and insert specific letter style to suit Project.

  1. Stencils:Standard stencils prepared with letter sizes complying with recommendations in ASMEA13.1.Minimum letter height is 1-1/4 inches (30 mm) for ducts, and 3/4 inch (20 mm) for access door signs and similar operational instructions.
  2. Material:[Fiberboard] [Brass].
  3. Stencil Paint:Exterior, oil-based, alkyd-gloss black enamel, unless otherwise indicated.Paint may be in pressurized spray-can form.
  4. Identification Paint:Exterior, oil-based, alkyd enamel in colors according to ASMEA13.1, unless otherwise indicated.

Retain one of two paragraphs below; do not specify for hot, 125 degF (52 degC), noninsulated pipe systems.

  1. Snap-on Plastic Pipe Markers:Manufacturer's standard preprinted, semirigid, snap-on type.Include color-coding according to ASMEA13.1, unless otherwise indicated.
  2. Pressure-Sensitive Pipe Markers:Manufacturer's standard preprinted, color-coded, pressure-sensitive-vinyl type with permanent adhesive.

Retain and edit first two paragraphs below to suit Project.

  1. Pipes with OD, Including Insulation, Less Than 6 Inches (150 mm):Full-band pipe markers, extending 360 degrees around pipe at each location.
  2. Pipes with OD, Including Insulation, 6 Inches (150 mm) and Larger:Either full-band or strip-type pipe markers, at least three times letter height and of length required for label.
  3. Lettering:Manufacturer's standard preprinted captions as selected by Architect.

Retain and edit paragraph above or first paragraph and subparagraph below to suit Project.

  1. Lettering:Use piping system terms indicated and abbreviate only as necessary for each application length.
  2. Arrows:Either integrally with piping system service lettering to accommodate both directions of flow, or as separate unit on each pipe marker to indicate direction of flow.
  3. Plastic Tape:Manufacturer's standard color-coded, pressure-sensitive, self-adhesive vinyl tape, at least 3 mils (0.08 mm) thick.
  4. Width:1-1/2 inches (40 mm) on pipes with OD, including insulation, less than 6 inches (150 mm); 2-1/2 inches (65 mm) for larger pipes.
  5. Color:Comply with ASMEA13.1, unless otherwise indicated.
  6. Valve Tags:Stamped or engraved with 1/4-inch (6.4-mm) letters for piping system abbreviation and 1/2-inch (13-mm) sequenced numbers.Include 5/32-inch (4-mm) hole for fastener.
