General information

The Inaugural 2017 Summit was held in Auckland New Zealand, sister city of Qingdao China. On the last day it was announced that the Education Bureau of the Municipal government of Qingdao would host the 2018 Summit. This will be held in Qingdao, China from 9 to 20 July 2018 with Special Topic Days visiting Qufu, Beijing and Hangzhou.

Eligibility

The Summit is primarily for senior high school and first year tertiary students (ages 15-20) attending university or college from the cities, schools or regions with sister city, sister school or friendship agreements with China. Places are available for students outside these parameters on a case by case basis.

Priority is also given to applicants of New Zealand heritage who can genuinely engage in comparative cultural dialogue and articulate their perspective on what it is like to be a New Zealander in contrast to other cultures, lifestyles and customs. This requirement reflects the spirit of New Zealand China relationships and our desire to prepare future leaders to work together within a cross cultural environment.

Application process

Applicants must complete the application form. A deposit of $500 is required to confirm your commitment and place in the delegation. A recommendation from your school is highly desirable. The deposit is refundable should you withdraw your place before 5 May. This allows a replacement time to arrange for their application and processing. Applications close 8 June 2018.

Fees

The fee of NZD2000 is inclusive of all in-country costs including the Summit registration fee. It covers meals, housing (hotel, homestay and halls of residence), internal travel (air and bullet train), airport transfers, site visits, and entry fees.

Fees do not include the airfare to Shanghai or return from Qingdao, medical and travel insurance or visa administration fee.

We are pleased that the fee has already reduced by $500 per person as we continue to seek scholarships and sponsorship to support students. We encourage applicants to seek their own sponsorship and support from school, local community, Rotary Club and/or local council international relations unit where sister city relations are managed. We will advise any further reduction in the fee no later than 30 April 2018.

Accompanying staff

Program Leaders will accompany the delegation from New Zealand throughout the program with the New Zealand President of the Youth Leadership Summit also in attendance.

Air travel options

Delegates may book their own international travel to ensure a more competitive cost (China holiday period limits lower fares) and meet the group in Shanghai on the morning of July 9th. A private coach takes you from Shanghai International Airport to Hangzhou (approximately three hours). You may also choose to meet the delegation in Hangzhou that day. A letter for your visa application will be provided and it is compulsory to have medical and travel insurance.

Should you wish to travel with the group or make your reservations immediately to capture a competitive price please email directly to our group travel agency Obit Travel . Subject heading Youth Leadership Summit
