Natural Gas Distribution ME- Building Group

SECTION 02553 - NATURAL GAS DISTRIBUTION

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes the following for natural gas distribution outside the building:
  2. Piping.

1.2DEFINITIONS

  1. Gas Main: Utility's natural gas piping.
  2. Gas Distribution: Piping from gas main to individual service-meter assemblies.
  3. Point of Delivery: Piping outlet from service-meter assembly.
  4. Natural Gas Piping: Piping that conveys natural gas from point of delivery to natural gas utilization devices inside the building.

1.3PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum Working-Pressure Ratings:
  2. Piping and Valves: 100 psig minimum, unless otherwise indicated or directed.

1.4SUBMITTALS

  1. Welding certificates.
  2. Field quality-control test reports.

1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements of earthquake valves and are based on the specific system indicated. Refer to Division1 Section "Product Requirements."
  2. Welding: Qualify processes and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: SectionIX.
  3. Steel Pipe Welding: Qualify processes and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: SectionIX, "Welding and Brazing Qualifications."
  4. Comply with provisions in ASMEB31 Series, "Code for Pressure Piping."
  5. Certify that each welder has passed AWS qualification tests for welding processes involved and that certification is current.
  6. Comply with requirements of utility supplying natural gas and with authorities having jurisdiction for natural gas systems.
  7. Comply with ANSIZ223.1 or NFPA54 or AGAIFGC for materials, installation, testing, inspection, and purging.

1.6DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Handling Flammable Liquids: Remove and legally dispose of liquids from drips in existing gas piping. Handle liquids to avoid spillage and ignition. Notify gas supplier. Do not leave flammable liquids on premises overnight.

1.7COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate connection to gas main with utility.
  2. Coordinate natural gas distribution with other utility Work.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1PIPES AND FITTINGS

  1. Steel Pipe: ASTMA53/A53M, TypeE or S, GradeB; Schedule40, black. Furnish pipe and fittings with factory-applied, corrosion-resistant polyethylene coating for underground use.
  2. Steel Fittings: ASMEB16.9, wrought-steel butt-welding type; and ASMEB16.11, forged steel.
  3. Steel Flanges and Flanged Fittings: ASMEB16.5.

2.2JOINING MATERIALS

  1. Components, Tapes, Gaskets, and Bolts and Nuts: Suitable for natural gas and as recommended by piping manufacturer.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1EARTHWORK

  1. Refer to Division2 Section "Earthwork" for excavating, trenching, and backfilling.

3.2PREPARATION

  1. Close equipment shutoff valves before turning off gas to premises or piping section.
  2. Inspect natural gas piping according to fuel gas code to determine that natural gas utilization devices are turned off in piping section affected.
  3. Comply with fuel gas code requirements for prevention of accidental ignition.

3.3PIPING APPLICATIONS

  1. Flanges, unions, and transition and special fittings with pressure ratings same as or higher than system pressure rating may be used, unless otherwise indicated.
  2. Underground Piping: The following having appropriate corrosion protection.
  3. NPS2-1/2 and Larger: Steel pipe, butt-welding-type fittings, and welded joints. Joints for connection to service regulators, service meters, and valves with flanged connections may be flanged
  4. Underground-to-Aboveground Piping Connections: Service-line riser.

3.4PIPING INSTALLATION

  1. Install underground, natural gas distribution piping buried at least 60 inches below finished grade.

3.5JOINT CONSTRUCTION

  1. Welded Joints: Construct joints according to AWSD10.12, using qualified processes and welding operators according to Part1 "Quality Assurance" Article.

3.6CONNECTIONS

  1. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties.
  2. Connect gas distribution piping to natural gas source and extend from service-meter assemblies and points indicated. Terminate at location for building's natural gas piping, terminate piping with caps, plugs, or flanges, as required for piping material
  3. Install flanges, in piping NPS2-1/2 and larger, adjacent to flanged valves and at final connection to each piece of equipment having flanged pipe connection.
  4. Do not use natural gas distribution piping as grounding electrode.

3.7LABELING AND IDENTIFYING

  1. Warning Tapes: Arrange for installation of continuous, underground, detectable warning tape over natural gas distribution piping during backfilling of trenches for piping.
  2. Refer to Division2 Section "Earthwork" for warning tapes.

3.8PAINTING

  1. Refer to Division9 Section "Painting" for field-applied finishes.
  2. Paint exposed metal piping, valves, service regulators, service meters and meter bars and piping specialties except units with factory-applied paint or protective coating.
  3. Damage and Touchup: Repair marred and damaged factory-applied finishes with materials and by procedures to match original factory finish.

3.9FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  1. Test, inspect, and purge natural gas distribution according to requirements of fuel gas code and utility.
  2. Repair leaks and defective valves and specialties and retest system until no leaks exist.
  3. Report results in writing.
