Running from 10.30am - 4.00pm,on Sat April 14,the Creative Librarians event in Cobh Library will be a fantastic day of entertaining stories and thought provoking discussions. Cobh library staff look forward to welcoming authors and former librarians Dermot Bolger, Thomas McCarthy , Caroline Farrell and published working librarians , Micheal O’ Flaherty , Elizabeth Desmond and Kristin Gleeson. The non librarian guest on the day is library enthusiast and ever popular author Collette Caddle
Award winning author, playwright and poet, Dermot Bolger who worked as a library assistant in Dublin in the early 1980’s has become a prolific writer as well as mentor and publisher over the past three decades. His most recently published novel the Lonely Sea and Sky was very well received in 2016 while his play Ulysses, a revised and expanded stage adaptation of Joyce's novel premiered at the Abbey in 2017.Cork County Library looks forward to welcoming him as moderator / interviewer at this creative librarians’ event.
Colette Caddle is the author of contemporary women’s fiction. She was first published by Poolbeg Press in 1999 and, as a result of her first book, Too Little Too Late, became the subject of a bidding war among publishers. She has since written 15 novels includingSecond Time Roundin 2016 and A Summer Breezein 2015 as well as a novella for the Open Door series.Colette is married with two sons and lives in north County Dublin.
Well known poet and novelist Thomas McCarthy,who worked for approximately 4 decades in Cork City Library, has now retired from his beloved Lending Library in Grand Parade. Over the past 40 years he has penned and published several works. His most recently published collection of poetry was Pandemonium in 2016. Tom is a very popular figure in both library and literature gatherings, it’s an honour to welcome him.
Caroline Farrell whose novel Lady Beth was the winner of the Carousel Aware prize best novel 2017, has also written a number of feature length and short screenplays including Framed (2018), Adam 2013 and the multi award winning In Ribbons2015. Caroline worked as a fulltime librarian for 30 years working her wayfrom Library Assistant to Executive Librarian.
A number of current Cork County Library staff will also read and speak about their published works. Elizabeth Desmond,Mallow library, has been shortlisted in the "From the Well" short story competition and has published in a variety of anthologies.
Micheal O Flaherty of Charleville library, has worked in Cork County Library since 2003. He has had two westerns published and was also shortlisted for the 2013 RTE Guide / Penguin Ireland short story competition.
Kristin Gleeson of Bantry library is originally from Philadelphia. She livesinWest Cork, where she writes, works as a librarian, plays the harp and sings in an Irish choir.She has written a historical biography and several historical novels, her most recent being , In Praise of the Bees in 2015.
Peter Keating of North Cork Mobile library will be launching his novel , Yehunda on April 14th which unfortunately means he won’t be reading in Cobh, but it is very exciting that another writing librarian has been published.
This event is a celebration of creativity and library staff would like to extend an invitation to all to come along and enjoy this wonderful day. It is very important to book your place in advance.
