The Dot

Dear Families,

This week students will about a girl named Vashti, who is reluctant artist with little self-confidence. Encouraged to keep trying, Vashti develops faith in herself, and passes on the self-confidence she learned. This week students will read and spell words the long e spelled with ea, as in eat and peach. Students will add inflected endings (-ed, es, er, and -est) to words ending with y.

In writing, students are writing about a memory that each treasures. In grammar, students will learn more about being verbs and will begin to learn about adjectives.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Donaghy

Skill: The letters ea are a vowel team, two letters coming together in a word. They stand for the long e sound in words such as: eat and peach. Though the letters ea are a common vowel team, they are irregular because one cannot distinguish the spelling of the sound from ee.

Skill: When adding the suffixes -er, -est, -es, and -ed to a word that ends in y, change y to i, and then add the suffix. When adding the suffix -ing to a word that ends in y, do not change y to i. Examples: bumpy, bumpier, bumpiest and carry, carries, carried, carrying.
