Video

Watch Ross Collins read Dear Vampa and answer some questions about his book on the Scottish Book Trust website:

Community

Where do you live? Talk about your community and the people that live there. Discuss if you like to have the Pires or the Wolfsons for your neighbours.

SOC 1-11a

Letter writing

Bram writes a letter to Vampa to tell him about his neighbours. Write a letter to tell someone about where you live. Tell them about your home, your neighbourhood, what you like to do, shops, or your friends.

LIT 0-26a LIT 1-22a

Mapping

Vampa lives in Transylvania and Bram lives in Pennsylvania. Look them up on a map. If you wanted to visit Bram or Vampa, how would you get there from your school? Can you plan a journey for Bram to visit Vampa?

Party Planning

The Wolfson Family plans a housewarming party. When the Pire Family went to the party there was nothing for them to drink. What would the Wolfsons eat and drink? Can you plan a party? Think about who you would invite and what kind of food and drink you would like to have at your party.

HWB 0-23a HWB 1-19a HWB 1-23a

Ask children to do some group work to plan the party. Ask the groups to make invitations, plan the food and drink and decorate the venue.

Role Play

Dear Vampa is a story all about accepting others and realising we might not be so different after all. Ask half of the class to represent the Wolfson Family. Ask the other half to represent the Pire Family. Using information from the book, can the Pires show the Wolfsons how they live? Engage the children in role play. Can the Wolfsons show the Pires what life is like for their family?
