WOMEN MINISTERS IN DEVOLVED GOVERNMENTS
Scotland has eleven cabinet ministers (including the Lord Advocate) of whom three are women (27 per cent) and ten deputy ministers (including the Solicitor General), two of whom are women. Wales has eight cabinet ministers, five of whom (62 per cent) are women. This cabinet, formed in October 2000 when the Liberal Democrats entered a coalition with Labour, is the only predominantly female cabinet in UK history. As well as the five cabinet ministers there is one woman among the five deputy ministers. Table 2 lists former women ministers in the Welsh and Scottish governments (all Labour). Northern Ireland has three women ministers out of twelve (16 per cent) in a multi-party power-sharing government. Half of the SDLP’s four ministers are women and Bairbre de Brún is one of two from Sinn Féin.
