Program Mission

BPT Youth Sports STEAM Camp @ HCC focuses on the academic and personal development of underrepresented scholars in the Bridgeport Public Schools and surrounding districts. Our mission is to have scholars exposed to the STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) through various workshops and hands on experiments. BPT Youth Sports STEAM @ HCC is geared towards developing the student’s cognitive skills, problem solving skills, test taking skills, presentational skills and more. We will send your child home with the sense of empowerment, lifelong tools and skills for college readiness and more.

Program Overview

·  Daily academic workshops that build college readiness in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM).

·  Scholars will spend time developing their self-esteem, confidence, professionalism, team building challenges, and key presentational skills necessary for success.

·  Daily academic workshops allow scholars to engage in hands on experiments and projects in the following disciplines; biology, forensics, chemistry, physics, math, manufacturing, art, engineering, creative/technical writing and more!

·  Scholars will work with college professors and staff who promote a learning environment where scholars are encouraged but at the same time uniquely challenged to be creative thinkers and problem solvers while having fun by participating in various exciting activities.

·  A healthy breakfast and healthy lunch will be provided daily or scholars can bring in a peanut free/nut free meal and snack. One day will be dedicated to nutrition with a focus in healthy living.

·  The afternoon portion of the curriculum is dedicated to off-site organized sports with trained athletic coaches

·  Extra activities include trips to sites such as; Fairfield Audubon, Pleasure Beach, Seaside Beach and the Discovery Museum were our scholars will further explore the various species of the CT Sounds. Scholars will also participate in arts and crafts, team challenges, BBQs and more.

·  Scholars will get a chance to tour the campus and stroll through Housatonic’s Art Museum where they may observe the magnificent art gallery participate in an art scavenger hunt.

All scholars:

All workshops and experiments are tailored to specific grade levels. At the end of each session scholars will create a power point presentation on the accomplishments or a specific experiment or approved topic. Scholars will part take in all STEAM disciplines but present only one research at the end of the summer camp session. Parents/Guardians and other family members are encouraged to attend the end of camp BBQ event. The end of camp BBQ event will include student presentations; team and family building games; remarks from our scholars, remarks from the President of Housatonic Community College and the Executive Director of Bridgeport Organization for Youth Sports, Inc.

Pre and post math test will be given to all scholars for academic monitoring and to evaluate strengths and areas for improvement. Pre-test will allow faculty to better assist scholars per skill level. Post-test will allow scholars and faculty to evaluate growth areas and what steps to take next. Academics take place during the 9- 2 pm and Sports are from 2-4 pm. All Scholar athletes must participant in the academic portion of the day in order to participate in the sports curriculum. Certain days are dedicated to exploration trips which are other exciting ways to continue academic learning. Scholars are not permitted to leave campus without their counselors.

High School Seniors

Seniors who are interested in pursuing Housatonic post-secondary and are admitted into Housatonic Community College for the upcoming fall semester can prepare and take their Accuplacer exam; receive course/career advising by an academic advisor and register for courses if all financial aid or payments are adequate. Those High School Seniors who plan to attend Housatonic Community College in the fall will also attend a 1 to 3 day campus orientation at a later date in the summer.

Faculty and Camp Counselors:

All faculty members who instruct the STEAM based courses possess a degree in the field of study. The counselors are current college scholars who will assist faculty/Staff and campers. All counselors are CPR/AED and First Aid certified. Counselors are responsible for taking scholars to and from daily activities and will serve as an additional chaperon during trips and events. The camp will also consist of experienced tutors, mentors, and athletic coaches.

Cost of session includes:

Cost includes all activities, laboratory experiments, materials, trip expenses, T-shirt and athletic uniforms. Scholars are not required to bring any materials; certain trips may require a change of clothes. COST: $ 550 per scholars, many payment plans are available.
