Science in the News

All science students on the Panther Team will be required to research, read, and write a summary of one Science current event article a month. The Science current event article will be shared by the students in the class on a random and rotational basis, and presentations will be doneeach Friday of every month. The articles should be on a topic related to Science that has occurred with in two months of the presentation day. (Ex. If you are presenting September 19th, then the event had to occur in August or September.) Events can include: medical, weather, plants, animals, space, technological inventions in a field of science etc. Students may use newspapers, magazines, or the internet for their sources. (The internet sources MUST be a from science or news websites.) A copy of the article should be attached to the current event summary. The article must be properly sited, using APA format, at the end of the written summary. The article will count as a homework grade worth 100 points. Homework coupons or passes may not be used for this assignment.

APA FORMAT

Author last name, first initial.(date). Title of article, Title of the journal or magazine, volume, pages.

Note: Only the first letter of the title should be capitalized.

Magazine or Journal Example:

Newspaper Example:

Title of Article- 10pts

Summary – 30pts

  • Must address 5 key points learned from reading the article and brief explanation of the article. The key points and explanation must be written in your own words using complete sentences. (DO NOT PLAGIARIZE.)
  • Summary should be between 50- 150 words.

Copy of the article- 15pts

Rubric- 5pts

Presentation- 30pts

  • Must present article to class discussing 5 key points without reading the article of your summary. (Practice presentation before due date.)
