School Council Report04/03/2014
-Valentine’s Day results
During the last week of term the school council took on the responsibility of selling Valentine’s roses, sweets and SkyDive4Joe merchandise.
- They were split into two teams during the preparations to create some friendly competition to see which team could produce the most profit.
- Alice and Chris, along with Phoenix and Unicorn were responsible for buying and selling the roses,
- Oli and Lorna, along with Griffin and Dragon were responsible for buying and selling sweet bags.
It was a very successful week where not only did we just sell the Valentine’s gifts but a photobooth was set up in media to allow friends/ couples to have a personalised photo taken and printed, as well as organising live music to be played in the atrium on the Thursday to attract students.
Overall profits of the week were £235.87 which we are very proud of and all of it will be going to SkyDive4Joe.
-School Council awards
The school has been contacted by John Bercow MP, speaker of the House of Commons, and invited to enter the 2014 School Council Awards.
The awards are split into several age groups; we will be entering the 11-16 and 16-19 category (11-16 being presented by the school council and 16-19 by the senior student voice).
Aim is to showcase a project which we, as a school council, are proud of and has made a difference to the school.
The winners of these awards are invited to visit the Houses of Parliament for a prize giving ceremony in the Speaker’s State Apartments.
Over several meetings we have brainstormed different projects that we could present until we decided on the theme of “Charity days” for the 11-16 age group and “School council elections” for the 16-19 age group.
These were the key ideas brought up by the school council:
- Must interlink all ideas focussing on:
- Role of school council/ student voice
- Selection process of the charities for charity days
- Who can enter
- How we vote
- What happens on the charity days
- Changing the name from “non-school uniform day” to “charity day”
- SkyDive4Joe
- Valentine’s day
- Twitter campaign
- Charity has gone from the family to throughout the community
- Getting a tree planted as a memorial
- Over the next few meetings a draft presentation will be put together, predominantly written and put together by the student council with minimal involvement of the presidents and year 12 captains.
Ideas are still to be discussed between the senior student voice about the content of our project.
-Town Council attending our School Council meeting
On 21st January we were very lucky to have five members of Nailsea town council attend our Tuesday meeting.
- This came as a result of several members of the school council going to the Tithe Barn before Christmas to attend a town council meeting.
They were very grateful for the opportunity to sit in and observe the workings of our school council, as were we when we visited them.
- It was a very positive response as they congratulated the Presidents for the organisation and running of the meeting and council in general.
As a result of this, both councils would like to continue to build the relationship in the future.
-Nerf gun war
Suggestion proposed by Mr Duncan is to have a “nerf gun” war in the school grounds as a way of raising money and increasing the profile of school council who will carry out the test run.
A very positive and excited response came from the school council as the idea was put forward two meetings ago.
Multiple ideas for games were suggested by the students including “capture the flag”, “save the teacher” and “teachersvs students”.
It was suggested that this event could be incorporated into house challenges or used for sport relief this year.
The senior student voice have discussed this idea in depth and will have to be something that is thoroughly organised- the finished games may not be able to be played by the rest of the school this academic year.
Health and safety must bethoroughly looked into.
It is a very exciting project that the presidents are looking forward to organising and trying out in the near future.
-Sports Relief 2014
In the next few weeks we will be organising fundraisers for Sport Relief
- Ideas include a rag day for 6th form, keepyuppy challenge, staff vs sixth form netball match and battle of the year groups football tournament
-Presidential Elections
The school council play a key role in the presidential elections
- They are responsible for organising the voting slips and handing them out at the polling booths. Some students may also be asked to help count the votes
