Message from the President of the Board of Education

Superintendent of Schools Search

The search for a new Superintendent of Schools is moving along as planned. At the July 25, 2013 Board of Education meeting Mr. Paul Hashem was appointed as the Interim Superintendent. At the August 6, 2013 meeting the Board of Education retained School Leadership, LLC to assist inthe selection process for the permanent Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Howard S. Smith and Mr. Allan R. Berry, consultants from School Leadership, LLC are currently working with the Board of Education to plan for the search and for significant community input into the process.

On November 5 and 6, the consultants will be in the District meeting with various focus groups designated by the Board of Education. These groups will include students, administrators, teachers, parents, support staff and community members. The consultantswill collect information about the District, about perceivedleadership challengesover the next three to five years and about the desired personal characteristics and professional experiences those participating wouldlike to see in the next Superintendent of Schools. In addition, an online survey requesting similarinput from constituents not able to attend the various focus group meetings has been activated. Individuals wishing to provide information for the Board of Education to consider can access the survey at at the link at the District website. The survey will accept comments through Friday, November 8. Once all of the responses from the focus groups and the online survey are analyzed, Dr. Smith and Mr. Berry will prepare a report for the Board of Education summarizing what they have heard, including recommended specifications for the position. At the meeting of December 17, the Board of Education will officially receive the report and adopt position specifications that will be used by the consultants and the Board for the search.

Updates about the searchwill continue to be posted asit progresses. It is the Board’s tentative plan to appoint the new Superintendent of Schools at its May 6, 2014 meeting. In the interim, should you have questions about the status of or plans for the search, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Janet MacGregor Plarr, President

Board of Education
