Appendix 4Learning Resource Centre and Library

1. Purpose of Library and Learning Resource Centre regulations

The object of the Library and Learning Resource Centreregulations is to ensure the maximum efficiency of the Library service, which includes the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), for all its users. The Librarian is responsible for the maintenance of good order in the Library and Learning Resource Centre, and all users are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which does not interfere with the proper working of the Libraryor Learning Resource Centre service.

2. Access to the University Library andLearning Resource Centre

2.1 Access to the Learning Resource Centre is available to all Coventry University College students.

2.2 The Librarian has the right to refuse entry to anyone whom he/she does not consider has acceptable means of identification, does not have a valid reason for using the Learning Resource Centre or the UniversityLibrary, or for any other reason whether in possession of a valid ID card or not. Students excluded by the College/University will not be allowed access to the Learning Resource Centre or the University Library.

2.3 College staff and students should, in their own interest, notify the Student Support and the Learning Resource Centre of any change in their personal information, since any notice sent by the College to the borrower's last address is deemed to be adequate notification to the borrower.

3. Student Access Regulations

3.1 Restrictions of different loan periods for different items apply to all Learning Resource Centre (LRC) users. Coventry University College students have reading rights only access to the University Library therefore borrowing restrictions will only apply to the Learning Resource Centre.

3.2 Borrowers may have up to 6 one week items and 4 one day itemson loan at any one time.

3.3 Borrowers cards are not transferable, and registered readers are responsible for all items issued on their cards. Lost staff and student ID cards should be reported immediately to the Customer Services Team. A charge will normally be made for replacing lost cards.

4. Return of loans from the Learning Resource Centre

4.1 With the exception of paragraph 4.2 . all items on loan must be returned on or before the date and time indicated on the borrower’s on-line record. If they are not returned by that date fines will be charged at the current rate. Details of fines can be found in the LRC.

4.2 Items borrowed from the LRC may be recalled, and if not returned within 7 days of the date of the recall request will be treated as overdue from that date irrespective of the original due date on issue; fines will be incurred at current rates. Details of fines can be found in the LRC.

4.3 Loans may be renewed, at the Librarian’s discretion and if not reserved by another user by presenting the item at the LRC issue desk, or online or by using the telephone renewal service.

5. Limitations and restricted loan arrangements

Most books in the LRC may be borrowed as detailed in regulations 3 above. The following exceptions should be noted.

5.1 One day loans Items designated “one day loan” may be borrowed at any time during the day until midnight on the following day.

5.2 One week loans Items designated "one week loan" are lent for one week only.

6. Learning Resource Centre and Coventry University Library

6.1 Users must conduct themselves quietly in the LRC and Library: disorderly conduct will not be tolerated. People studying in areas designated for silent study must refrain from making noise or causing a disturbance of any kind whatsoever. Students should keep noise to a reasonable level and not impede the functioning of the LRC and Library or the ability of Library staff to carry out their duties.

6.2 Food and drink may only be consumed in the designated areas; all drinks should be contained in screw top plastic bottles. In line with UK legislation, smoking is forbidden within anyCollege or University premises.

6.3 Audio use of IT equipment is only permitted with headphones and must not disturb other LRC or Library users. Please consider other students when conducting a phone call, leaving the Learning Resource Centre for the duration of the phonecall, or using the designated library zones located in Coventry University Library, When in the LRC or Library, mobiles should be switched to “silent” or “off”.

6.4 Learning Resource Centre and Library property, equipment or the fabric of the buildings must not be marked, defaced or damaged. Anyone responsible for such damage may be required to replace the damaged item, and may face disciplinary action.

6.5 Seats in the LRC or Library may not be reserved. Books or papers left on the tables may be removed by the staff, and neither the College, the University, nor its employees, can be held responsible for the loss of, or damage to, property left on the premises.

6.6 The children of LRC and Library users are welcome in the LRC and Library but must remain under the close supervision of their parents at all times.

7. Sanctions

7.1 The College and University Librarians or representatives have authority to withdraw Library facilities from any reader infringing these regulations or in any way interfering with the proper working of the LRC or Library. In particular, LRC and Library facilities will be withdrawn for the following non-inclusive reasons:

(ii) attempting to remove items without authorisation,

(iii) rude or abusive behaviour towards library staff,

(iv) repeated breaches of these regulations.

7.2 Users whose behaviour in the opinion of LRC and Library staff is considered to be in breach of these regulations will be asked to comply with them and must do so immediately. If they do not comply with that request they will be asked to show their College ID card or other permission to use the LRC or University Library. Users who refuse to show such proof of identity will be asked to leave the premises and must do so immediately. Details may be taken of the name and ID number of students who refuse to comply with a request to observe these Regulations. These details will be stored on a database and used to monitor repeated breaches of the LRC and Library Regulations and may be used as the basis for disciplinary action or the withdrawal of LRC and Library facilities.

7.3 Where students are responsible for damage to LRC or Library material or are deemed to have attempted to remove items from the Learning Resource Centre or Librarywithout authorisation they may be charged the current cost of replacing the items and/or a sum up to a maximum of £100, depending on the nature of the damage and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

7.4 These regulations have been approved by the Board of Governors of Coventry University and the Librarian and his/her staff are charged with ensuring that they are observed.

7.5 Serious and/or repeated breaches of LRC and Library Regulations will be referred to the Director of the College and may be referred to the Vice-Chancellor or Deputy Vice-Chancellor and may result in sanctions being taken including expulsion (see Appendix5). Users who are not members of the university may have their LRC and Library membership summarily withdrawn for infringing these regulations.

8. Appeals

Appeals against the decision of the Librarian can be made to the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor (for the University) with responsibility for theLibrary and to the Director (or nominee) of the College for the Learning Resource Centre
