Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes students in grades 5-12 who have engaged in volunteer activities and have demonstrated exceptional community service. The program is sponsored by Prudential in conjunction with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). State winners receive a $1,000 award. National winners receive a $5,000 award. The student application deadline is November 4, 2017 and must be submitted to your principal.

Intel Science Talent Search

Each year, more than 1,700 seniors attending American high schools conduct original research projects and present their work in the country’s oldest, most prestigious pre-college science competition: the Intel Science Talent Search, a program of Society of Science & the Public. Forty of these young innovators are chosen as finalists and invited to participate in a nearly week-long event in Washington, D.C., where they compete for over USD 1.25 million in awards and scholarships. There are several deadlines. The first is November 15, 2017.

Ideas Matter Essay Contest

Eleventh and Twelfth grade Arkansas students are invited to write a 500-word essay on a prompt about today’s interdependent world including issues of health, wellness, economics, business, and government with the winning essay receiving a $2500 scholarship. DeadlineNovember 3, 2017.

Letters about Literature

Letters About Literature is a national reading/writing contest sponsored by the Center for the Book in the US Library of Congress in partnership with Target Stores. The contest is open to US students in grades 4-12. Entries consist of a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre, explaining how the author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves. Deadline January 10, 2018.

Action for Nature

sponsors the International Young Eco-Hero Awards to recognize youth aged 8 to 16 who have completed environmental projects focused on environmental advocacy, environmental health, research or protection of the natural world. Cash prizes of up to $500 will be awarded. The deadline is February 28.

Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards

The Toshiba ExploraVision Awards is a competition for teams of 2-4 students in grades K-12. The goal of the competition is to encourage students to explore a vision of a future technology. The teams research a technology or device and project how it might change in the future. They identify necessary breakthroughs to enable the development of the technology and discuss the positive and negative impact of the technology on society. There are four divisions: grades K-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-9, and grades 10-12. Within each division, there is one first prize and one second prize. The first prize consists of a $10,000 US Savings Bond for each student on the winning team. The second prize consists of a $5,000 US Savings Bond for each student on the winning team. The deadline is February 1.

DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition

The DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition is sponsored by the DuPont Center for Collaborative Research & Education in cooperation with General Learning Communications. The competition is open to US and Canadian students in grades 7-12 inclusive. The competition involves writing a 700 to 1,000 word essay about a scientific or technological development, event, or theory chosen by the student. Deadline February 9, 2018.

West Point Bridge Design Contest

The West Point Bridge Design Contest is open to US students age 13 through grade 12 at the time of registration. Students compete individually (team of one) or in teams of two members. This engineering competition involves designing truss bridges. Each member of the first-place team receives a $10,000 scholarship. Each member of the five finalist teams wins a notebook computer. Registration opens in early January and ends on February 28. The final round is held in April.

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program

February 1 through March 13, Kohl's accepts nominations for the Kids Who Care scholarship program. Nominees are evaluated based on their volunteer service and are awarded scholarships and prizes at three levels: Store, Regional and National. Store winners are awarded a $50 Kohl's Gift Card, Regional winners a $1,000 scholarship toward their post-secondary education and National winners a $10,000 scholarship, plus Kohl's donates $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on behalf of each National winner. Nominations are accepted between February 1, 2011 and March 13, 2018.

Ayn Rand’s Anthem

Ayn Rand’s novels are inspiring and intellectually challenging. But they can also be financially rewarding for high school and college students. The Ayn Rand Institute sponsors annual essay contests that offer over 600 prizes and $100,000 in prize money each year. This essay contest is available to 8th-10th graders. Essay is due March 20th, 2018.

Doodle 4 Google

Doodle 4 Google is an annual program that invites K-12 students in the United States to use their artistic talents to think big and redesign our homepage logo for millions to see. This year, we ask students to exercise their creative imaginations around the theme, “If I Could Invent One Thing to Make the World a Better Place...” One talented student artist will see their artwork appear on the Google homepage, receive a $30,000 college scholarship, and a $50,000 technology grant for their school along with some other cool prizes! Deadline is March 20, 2018.

Swackhamer Disarmament Video Contest

The Swackhamer Disarmament Video Contest is an annual contest in which contestants submit short (2-3 minute) videos on an aspect of nuclear disarmament (the specific topic is announced on February 1 each year). The deadline for submissions is April 1st.

American College Foundation

Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 each; with multiple winners selected each year. All high school students are eligible to apply. Deadline April 1, 2018.

Fountainhead Essay Contest

For 11th and 12th graders. Students may choose one of three essays based upon Ayn Rand’s Fountainhead. Essays will be judged on both style and content. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of The Fountainhead. Awards range from $50-$10,000.Essay deadline is April 26, 2018.

The Do Something Award

Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Awards

An annual series of awards to encourage poets to explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit. The Poetry Awards include three age categories: Adult, Youth 13-18, and Youth 12 & Under. Guidelines and past winners are available here.The deadline for submissions is July 1st.

FTF Teen Travel Writing Scholarships

The rules of the annual FTF Teen Travel Writing Scholarship are simple: Submit a blog about your community -- where you live, or a place you identify with -- and why tourists should visit there. What is the first thing you would show them? What are some interesting cultural, historical or fun attractions people should see? Who should they meet? What should visitors do, try, taste or listen to when there? Use words plus images and/or video to share your community with travelers. Your travel blog can be funny, serious or contemplative, as long as it's informative. The top three winners will receive cash awards. Applicants must be ages 13-18 and attending grades 8-12 as of June 27, 2018. Graduating seniors are only eligible if you submit your completed travel blog on or before June 27, 2018. Applications will be accepted between April 1, 2018 and July 27, 2018.
