TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Introduction

In this experiment you will study six different chemical reactions. You will classify each chemical reaction as one of four types:

●  Synthesis

●  Decomposition

●  Single Displacement

●  Double Displacement

You Will Need

●  6 test tubes

●  test tube rack

●  2 droppers

●  3 beakers

●  magnesium ribbon

●  iron filings

●  hydrochloric acid

●  sodium hydroxide

●  sodium sulfate

●  barium chloride

●  copper sulfate

●  hydrogen peroxide

●  manganese dioxide

What You Will Do

1.  Label number each test tube from 1 to 6.

2.  Place a small amount of sodium sulfate solution into test tube 1. Add a dropper full of barium chloride solution. Record the results.

3.  Place a small piece of magnesium ribbon into test tube 2. Add a small amount of hydrochloric acid to the test tube. Record results.

4.  Add a small amount of iron filings into test tube 3. Cover the iron filings with a small amount of copper sulfate. Gently shake the test tube. Record the results.

5.  Take test tube 4 and obtain a small amount of hydrogen peroxide from the teacher. Add a tiny amount of manganese dioxide. Record the results.

6.  Take test tube 5 and obtain a small amount of sodium hydroxide from the teacher. Add a drop at a time of hydrochloric acid until the solution is clear. (No longer pink.) Record the results.

7.  Place a small amount of copper sulfate into test tube 6. Add a small amount of sodium carbonate to the test tube. Record the results.

8.  Return your utensils to you teacher for clean up.

Questions

Question One (Knowledge/3)

How did you know that a chemical reaction occurred in each experiment?

Question Two (Knowledge/3)

Which reactions produced a gas? Which reactions produced a powder or solid? Which reactions produce a colour change?

Question Three (Communication/4)

Were there any errors in this lab? How did these errors affect your results?

Question Four (Application/6)

Write word equations for each of the chemical reactions.

Question Five (Application/18)

Write balanced chemical equations for all reactions in this experiment.
