Peer Support Specialists (PSS) are people living in recovery with mental illness and substance abuse or substance abuse only and who provide support to others who can benefit from their lived experiences. This training teaches people who have received mental health services to work in the mental health system to provide peer support and recovery education. There is no fee for this training.
Participants will be selected through an application process. Be a current or former client of mental illness and substance abuse services or substance abuse services only. Have a minimum of 1 year of demonstrated recovery time between diagnosis and application as PSS.
Priority will be given to applicants based on submission of registration and geographic location (we would like to have PSS throughout the state and not saturated in one geographic area).
*Scholarship per diem and mileage will be paid on reimbursement after attendance at the training. Scholarship lodging will be paid for in advance of training by the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH).
