What’s Joel’s story and how do donors like you make a difference?

Joel’s mom, Christine and dad escaped the war in Congo and then spent five years in Kenya as refugees before settling in Canada. Coming to a new country is hard. About 25% of refugees regularly use food banks and many are unemployed, which is not the case with Christine and her husband. Both have university educations, but have struggled to integrate into life in Canada. The boys’ father works as a plumber’s helper while Christine raises the three young brothers. They did not want their sons Joel, Josiah and David to struggle with poverty when they get older.

Thanks to donors like you, Joel and his brothers won’t have to. They are getting the help they need at theUnited Way-funded African Children’s Homework Clubin Burnaby’s Edmonds/Kingsway neighbourhood. The program focuses on literacy and uses fun and creative activities to promote reading.The children also get assistance with homework.
