SANITARIAN III

DEFINITION

This is the advanced/leadership level of the Public Health Sanitarian series. Under the supervision of the Environmental Health Supervisor, this work is characterized by leadership responsibility for training and advising lower level Sanitarians, and providing specialized expertise in assigned programmatic areas.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists in the promotion of accepted principles of sanitation and enforcement of the health laws; helps to inspect, consult and obtain compliance with health ordinances in general sanitation; The following are examples of duties a Sanitarian III may be required to perform, though not all duties may be required and others not listed may be: evaluates sanitary applications and their compliance with state code, makes field inspections of private water supplies and sewage systems to assure compliance with established sanitation laws and regulations; surveys campgrounds, recreational camps, public swimming places, motels, tourist rooming houses, bed and breakfast facilities, restaurants, retail food processors, convenience stores, bakeries, and mobile home parks in order to ascertain the status and compliance with Wisconsin Administrative codes; investigates public health nuisances, submits recommendations for corrective action and re-inspects to assure proper adjustments have been made; collects samples for laboratory analysis; performs physical and chemical tests; keeps records and makes reports; performs related Building and Fire Code inspections; provides on-going leadership and specialized expertise to lower level Sanitarians including training of new employees and the resolution of work problems; works with lower level Sanitarians in achieving compliance constructively; develops and applies specialized expertise in specific public health issues e.g. asbestos, indoor air problems, infectious waste, etc. in order to provide up-to-date training, responds to the most complex compliance issues; effectively participates in policy/procedures development; provides liaison with external agencies as required; communicates issues, problems, changes needed to the Environmental Health Supervisor; and other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public health sanitation, environmental health, environmental science, soil science, biological sciences or related fields. Two years experience comparable to that gained as a Public Health Sanitarian II with Public Health and attainment of the State of Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian credential or the National Environmental Health Association Registered Sanitarian credential Credentialing in environmental areas such as soil tester, plumbing inspector PLB 2, Level 1 Well Inspector, lead, asbestos, hazardous materials, mold, healthy homes, pools and food safety may be required, depending on the lead worker duties assigned. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental sanitation; knowledge of the health and safety laws and codes and their practical application; knowledge of the facilities and establishments inspected for sanitation purposes; ability to recognize health law violations and recommend changes; ability to secure pertinent information through inspections and to analyze, interpret and make corrections based on this information; ability to perform all types of environmental inspections and use appropriate field equipment; ability to respond to public health emergencies; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local officials, other agencies and the general public; ability to train lower level sanitarians in the technical aspects of their responsibilities; ability to resolve problems that may develop between the sanitarians and licensed operators, contractors or the general public; ability to effectively use computers in the office or in the field while making inspections; ability to physically access and inspect diverse locations requiring stamina and agility

Licenses or Other Requirements: Must have access to personal transportation and have or be eligible for a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
