Samye Ling Tibetan Centre

Pupils enjoyed a day in Dumfriesshire and caught a glimpse of the East. Pupils in 6th Year visited the Samye Ling Tibetan Centre on Friday 5th October 2001. They were met by Karma Lamzang who gave them a tour of the temple. Instruction on meditation was given by another monk. Most pupils enjoyed the experience and hopefully, it will help them in their every day lives to release stress. Unfortunately, the pupils were unable to take part in Tai Chi instruction because the weather was so awful. A walk around the grounds was also out of the question !

Business Dynamics - 2 day conference 6/7 November at EBP, British Aerospace has been postponed and will be rescheduled in January. The postponement is a result of a staff illness at Business Dynamics. We hope Mr Clark gets well soon.

S3 Drugs Awareness Day.

On Wednesday 26th September all Carrick Academy S3 pupils attended an action packed Drugs Awareness day at Maybole Town Hall. There were a number of workshops dealing with drugs, smoking, health issues and other related topics.

At the smoking workshop, pupils watched a short video which concentrated on both active and passive smoking; they were also given information leaflets on the dangers of smoking. This attracted the attention of all pupils and interest was shown in all parts.

At one of the workshops pupils were given statements and had to determine whether they were true or false. These covered a wide range of issues from alcohol abuse to tattoos and body piercing. This workshop gave excellent information and pupils looked as though they were thinking twice about things!

The workshop run by two Strathclyde police officers explained penalties for drug abuse. It also explained a bit more about where drugs were obtained and what exactly goes into them. A few shocked faces were to be seen when it was said that DOG and HORSE worming tablets may go into powdered drugs. This workshop seemed to grab every pupil’s attention and lots of questions were fired at the police officers who were delighted to see so much interest being shown.

FIRST DISCO OF THE YEAR

On Thursday the 27th of September the gladrags were pulled out of the cupboard and everyone turned up at the Town Hall for the first school disco of the session. The lights were flashing, the music blaring and everyone was having a great time. Ticket sales were a little slower than usual but despite this there seemed to be a good overall turnout. The first years seemed to have a wonderful time and we will no doubt have another great disco soon! – (See the Halloween Disco Notice).

A TASTE OF TURNBERRY

Mrs Baird took a party of S4 and S5 to Turnberry for a visit on the afternoon of Thursday 25th October. A video was shown of the hotel’s activities and information provided. One of the highlights seemed to have been the photograph which was taken. One pupil was heard to express disappointment that, “We didn’t get seeing the spa or the restaurant.”

The sports centre proved to be very interesting and the boys went up to see the shooting gallery. On then to the golf shop which caused a few eyes to open in sheer amazement at the range of products.

The goody bags went down well as they contained leaflets about opportunities in the hotel industry and more importantly THE T-SHIRT.

Thanks to Mrs Baird for organising this trip.

The 10 members of the Hospitality Group had the chance to cook and serve up this All Scottish Gourmet menu in the Home Economics Department.

Jim Watson, chef at Elms Court Hotel in Ayr was on hand to set things going. The group worked in three teams preparing the dishes.

The only disappointment of the afternoon was that the second group of Chinese visitors, scheduled to be present to sample some of our traditional Scottish food, was not there.

DOMESTIC ABUSE DAY

On Thursday 20th of September a group of 19 students and 1 teacher set off for the day to British Aerospace to find out about Domestic Abuse. The pupils ranged in age from 1st year to 6th year and were accompanied by Miss Duncan from the Music Department. The day was aimed at highlighting the abuse men inflicted on women and solutions to this.

Two ladies – one from South Ayrshire Council and one connected with Women’s Refuge - were the organisers. The day was very successful and a lot of tasks were undertaken to help understand what Domestic Abuse was all about. These tasks included speaking freely about what your thoughts were on the subject, watching several videos about what some women have experienced and group work dealing with problem solving tasks.

The day was extremely interesting and gave a very good insight into this problem, which occurs through out Scotland.
