Sampling Instructions for LIVESTOCk Water Samples

Dear Client,

Thank you for ordering a Livestock Suitability test kit through Essential Water Solutions, Inc. By working with Essential Water Solutions, Inc (EWS), we would like to extend to you our discounted rate of $30.00 per sample on services to get your livestock water tested. This test will screen for the following: Sodium, Chloride, Nitrate, Copper, Calcium, Conductivity, pH, Dissolved Solids, Magnesium, Sulfate, Iron, Manganese and SAR (sodium absorption rate).

Meaningful data from samples depends on proper collection of samples. Here are a few simple directions to follow that will help you obtain the best possible samples.

  1. If your Styrofoam kit came with a cold pack, make sure to freeze it the day before you collect your samples.
  2. Open a cold water faucet or hydrant and allow the water to run for 5-10 minutes. It is recommended that you collect your sample before any water treatment equipment, water troughs, bowls or tanks.
  1. Fill the enclosed bottle(s) to the neck of the bottle and screw the lid on tightly to prevent leakage. Refrigerate the sample until you are ready to send it to the laboratory.

If “total coliform”* (purity) is to be checked, please use caution with the sterile plastic bottle (small clear bottle). DO NOT rinse this jar.(A white pellet or powder is included in this container.) Avoid touching any inner surface of the bottle or lid.

When testing for coliform bacteria, additional measures should be taken. A faucet nearest the well should be chosen. Any aeration device or screen should be removed from the faucet. The end of the faucet should be sterilized with a propane torch, isopropyl alcohol or 30% chlorine bleach solution. Then the water should be allowed to run for at least 5 minutes. A positive coliform test may require additional testing to locate the source of bacteria.

  1. Place the bottle(s) (upright if possible) in the kit, including the frozen cold pack if it came with your kit.If the outside temperature high for the day does not exceed 40 degrees, the cold pack will not be necessary.
  2. Complete the submittal form with your reporting name, address and sample identification. Please include the date and time of sample collection. Place your submittal form in a plastic bag and include with your kit. Tape the kit shut securely and place the Midwest Labs return label on the kit.

Whether using a parcel service or U.S. mail, be sure to send sample(s) so they reach the laboratory with 24-48 hours. Ideal arrival time would be before 1:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Handling Precautions of the Additive in the Sterile Bottle:May be fatal if swallowed or inhaled. May damage clothing and equipment. Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Gloves and eye protection should be worn. Do not breathe vapors.

*Total Coliform testing is not part of the regular test and requires a sterile bottle for collection that is either included in your test kit or a glass jar boiled for 5 minutes can be used. Add an additional $15 per sample.

Please include a check payable to Midwest Laboratories unless you have made prior arrangements through EWS or one of their distributors or dealers. Please ship samples to:
