S1 –A Healthier Scotland Summary Notes

Humans need food to provide us with energy. This energy is used for growth, keeping us warm, movement and repairing our bodies. We need food in order to survive.

There are 4 main food groups. We should be able to give examples and describe what they are used for:

Food Group / Example / Use
Proteins / Chicken, eggs, meat / help the body grow and repair
Carbohydrates / Pasta, potato, bread / provide the body with energy
Fats / Butter, cream, bacon / provide the body with energy and warmth
Vitamins and Minerals / Fruit, vegetables / help fight disease and protect the body

The cardiovascular system is the term used to describe the heart, lungs and blood vessels.

Breathing rate is the number of breaths that you take in one minute. The average breathing rate for a teenager is 12-20 breaths per minute. This rate will increase when you exercise.

Heart rate is the number of times your heart beats in one minute. It is measured in beats per minute and we can feel the number of beats by checking our pulse in our neck or on our wrist. This will also increase when you exercise.
