Inthefallof1998,twenty-twoeasternColoradowheatproducersplantedcollaborativeon-farmtests(COFT)inBaca,Prowers,Kiowa,Cheyenne,KitCarson,Arapahoe,Morgan,andWeldcounties. Theobjectivewastocompareperformanceofthenewly-releasedRussianwheataphid

(RWA)-resistantvarieties–Halt,Prowers,Yumar,

andPrairieRed–withtheperformanceoftheRWA-susceptiblevarietiesTAM107andAkron. WorkingalongsidelocalExtensionagents,eachproducer-collaboratorreceived100poundsseedofeachvarietyandplantedthesixvarietiesinside-by-sidestrips.

The1998-99seasonwasthefourthyearof

winterwheatvarietyon-farmtesting. Manycollaboratingproducershaveconductedtestseachofthefouryears. ColoradoStateUniversityCooperativeExtensionagentshavetakenmoreandmoreresponsibilityforthesuccessofthisprogram–recruitingvolunteergrowers,deliveringseed,planningfieldlayoutandoperations,keepingrecords,coordinatingvisits,communicatingwithgrowersandcampuscoordinators,coordinationofweighingplotyields. Inadditiontoevaluationofnewvarietiesunderfarmconditions,on-farmtestingdirectlyinvolvesproducersinthevarietydevelopmentprocess,therebyreducingthenumberofyearsrequiredforadoptionofsuperior,newvarieties.

The1999COFTresultsaredividedintotwo

groupsaccordingtogeographiclocationwithinColorado. EightlocationsfromthesoutheastColoradogroupshowedYumartobethehighestyieldingvarietywithAkron,Halt,PrairieRed,andProwersinamid-yieldgroup. TAM107waslowestyielding. Ninelocationsfromtheeast-centralColoradogroupshowedAkron,Halt,andPrairieRedtobethehighest

yieldingvarietieswithProwers,TAM107,andYumarinaloweryieldinggroup. Overall,Yumar,Akron,Halt,andPrairieRedwerethetopyieldingvarietieswithProwersandTAM107yieldingless. TheyieldperformanceofYumarwasnoteworthy,especiallyinsoutheastColoradowhereclimaticconditionswereexceptionallyfavorable. Prowersperformedwellinthesoutheastaswell. Thenewlyreleased,RWA-resistantvarietiesperformedconsistentlybetterthan

TAM107acrossthestate.

LighttosevereinfestationsofRWAwereobservedatmostsoutheastColoradolocationsandsomeeast-centrallocations. Severeinfestationsofbrownwheatmitewereobservedinseveraleast-centrallocations. HailreducedyieldsattheKitCarsonNElocation.
