Run For Holland Board Of Directors

Brooke and Adam Burleson

45 Blue Sky Drive

Spruce Pine, NC 28777

The Run For Holland is a race event started by Brooke and Adam Burleson along with Spruce Pine Lions Club. In 2013 Brooke and Adam had a daughter born with Down syndrome. They named their daughter Holland after reading a short story called Welcome to Holland by Emily Perl Kingsley. The story describes what it is like to have a child born with a disability. When you are going to have a baby it is like planning a trip to Italy. You buy guide books and make wonderful plans. However, when your plane lands they tell you that you have landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place. It is just a different place. So you must go out and buy new guide books and learn a whole new language. Everyone you know is coming and going from Italy and you will say “Yes, that’s where we were supposed to go. That’s what we had planned”. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, very loving things… about Holland.

Brooke and Adam wanted to make a positive impact on the community and show everyone the idea behind the story. The Run For Holland was started in April 2014 and serves to promote awareness and support to the disabled community in and around Mitchell County, North Carolina. In our first year of operation we had more than 400 people come out to show their support. In additionto great support, we were also able to raise over $15,000 through sponsors, donors, and race fees. This was a huge amount considering we thought the first year would start small!

It has been decided that the majority of this money can and will be used to offer grants to organizations within our area that are also supporting our disabled community. Please see the grant application form attached to this letter and let us help you with anything that may be needed. There is no time limit on turning in applications;however, all money awarded will given on a first come first serve basis. For this reason we encourage applicants to turn in applications as soon as possible. All applications will be reviewed by the Run For Holland Board of Directors and voted on based on need and relevancy to the disabled community.
