From Our President

How Are You Going to Participate?

There are two things on my mind: the York-East Rotary Golf Outing and the CountyCup.

York-East Rotary Golf Outing

Friday, May 18th is the date for this year’s event.

Royal Manchester is the venue for this year’s event.

Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing & Peace Garden is the major recipient of the proceeds from this year’s event.

Work is currently underway on the marketing materials and strategies for making our outing bigger, better, bolder. Partnering with the GoldStarGarden brings with it new networking opportunities. We will be reaching out to VFW and American Legion chapters for support of the golf outing and potential golfers. If you know folks involved in these local clubs, please help us get in touch with them.

CountyCup

The biggest news is the commitment of our first major sponsor for the croquet tournament on September 22nd! Bill Shipley of Shipley Energy is a $15,000 sponsor this year, and wants to be our $25,000 presenting sponsor next year.

That leaves open the presenting sponsor slot for this year. If you are able to help with a contact for presenting sponsor, or sponsorship at any level, please let Joe Hackett know.

A core group of Rotarians from around York county has been meeting regularly over the past month in an effort to identify a point person for the various subcommittees: Marketing & Promotion; Sponsorship Campaign; Media; Budget & Finance; Non Profit Recruitment; Awards & Recognition; Event Management & Hospitality; Volunteer Recruiting & Training. I hope you can see yourself helping in one of these areas – let me or Joe know which area that will be.

In addition to the person power leading up to the event, there will be a tremendous need for volunteers (as many as 100) the day of the event and the few days prior to the event. Please mark your calendar for September 22nd NOW, and we will put you on the list as an event day volunteer.

This is a tremendous opportunity for each of us as Rotarians and as members of the York county community. If part of why you belong to Rotary is to network, this can expand your horizon ten-fold. If part of why you belong to Rotary is to give back to the community, this can expand your impact ten-fold. If part of why you belong to Rotary is to socialize with friends and to have fun, this can increase your fun factor ten-fold.

This is a tremendous opportunity. How are you going to participate?

Yours in Rotary,

Elizabeth

From the Foundation Committee

When you have the time, every Rotarian should visit the Rotary Foundation site and review the financial results for 2010-2011. The report is only six pages but is loaded with some very useful information. For example, the returns on the Foundation’s investment portfolio exceeded $112 million dollars. Combining the Annual Program Fund contributions with other initiatives, the Foundation received total contributions of $208.5 million in the 2011 fiscal year. As a result, total revenue hit a record of $328 million.

Expenses totaled $191 million with over $150 million spent on humanitarian programs. fund development expenses of $17 million and general administrative expenses of $6 million.

Through the generosity of Rotarians and some strong investment returns, the Net Asset Growth for 2011 was $137 million with Total Net Assets topping $850 million. Over the past 10 years, 88 percent of the Foundation’s total spending was for programs. Few humanitarian programs can even approach this efficient use of donations.

Nowhere else can we get as big an impact from our donations as we get from The Rotary Foundation. We ask each Rotarian to donate $100 every year to keep these programs growing . To those who have made a contribution, thanks. To those who have yet to do so, please make whatever donation you can this Rotary year.

Fundraisers

Coffee Fundraiser – We have a special opportunity to not only raise funds ($3/bag) for the York East Rotary Club, but we are also supporting a Rotary Foundation 501 (c) (3) organization that is providing communities world-wide with safe drinking water. Green Mountain Sumatran Coffee is being sold at the check-in table every Tuesday while supplies last. Each bag is $10. Please support both York East and the Rotary Foundation’s “Clean Water for Coffee Producing Countries”.

York East Golf Outing – the Community Service Projects Committee is starting to work on the spring Golf Outing. We need volunteers to help with PR, sponsors, volunteers, compiling a mailing list, and a host of other activities. Please contact Linda Gorter at for more information on volunteer opportunities.

CountyCup – On September 22, 2012, Rotary clubs and participating volunteers will be holding a croquet tournament fundraiser at the Sovereign Stadium. A multi-club committee has been meeting regularly to plan and coordinate the details of this event. Volunteers, sponsors and croquet teams will be needed! Nonprofit organizations will benefit from the fundraising efforts of the participants!

District Events

President Elizabeth would like each and every one of our club members to attend at least one district event this Rotary year. Please visit and click on Club Bulletin on the Home Page to see a list of currently scheduled events.
