Wedding Etiquette: The Maid of Honor

The Maid of Honor is one of the most important positions in the bridal party. It’s her responsibility to make sure that everything from dresses to accessories are perfect for the bride’s big day. But here are a few important tasks the maid of honor is responsible for that you might not know about:

  • Monitoring the alcohol consumption of every member of the bridal party (including the bride herself) on the day of the wedding. Think of The Maid of Honor as the designated driver for your wedding. She’s also in charge of making sure the bride stays hydrated during the wedding day celebration.
  • Knowing the location of the bride’s personal items- The Maid of Honor must know where to find anything that the bride might need during the wedding day festivities, whether it’s lipstick or a cell phone.
  • Preparing the bridal suite- The Maid of Honor is also responsible for getting the bridal suite ready for the happy couple. Remember this task should be completed before the end of the reception.
  • Watching the money-The Maid of Honor is also the treasurer of the wedding. She’s responsible for safeguarding all the monetary gifts that the couple receives on their wedding day.

I’m also a camera and technology nerd, and I enjoy the dynamics of the photo industry such as new cameras, lenses, etc.”

Question: How did ICDOPE-Intelligent. Creative. Dope. come to be?

Answer: “ICD was born from my appreciation of the arts, being an artist and my joy of travel. I’ve always admired photographers and the art of photography, the ability to capture the emotion of a moment, and to make it last forever. Photography was a hobby that became a serious profession for me. I studied and worked with photographersto absorb the art form. The turning point that influenced my decision to go all-in and become a full-time photographer was when I was on vacation in Australia, where I travelled The Great Ocean Road, in Victoria west of Melbourne, and captured a couple hours of “The Twelve Apostles.” These are a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park. From that point on, I was all in.”

Question: Can you tell our readers about how you began working with Rose, A Special Event Company?

Answer: “I began working with Rose, A Special Event Company when I captured Senior Event Specialist, Diane Lynn’s clients Connie and Nate’s engagement party and wedding. Rose, A Special Event Company had a great staff on hand that made my job as both photographer and videographer much easier and more coordinated. I was able to capture the wedding party, family, and ceremony photos, as well as the reception hosts without any hiccups.”

Is there anevent that you photographed for Rose, A Special Event Company that was particularly special or memorable? What made it so?

Answer: “The Connie and Nate wedding would have to be the event that was special. There were some welcome, yet unexpected attendees at the reception. The reception area wasn’t equipped to accommodate the large group so the staff of Rose, A Special Event Company jumped into action to rearrange the reception area, and with the assistance of the venue staff we were able to accommodate the additional guests. I set my camera down to help as well, all in the spirit of making the wedding day about the bride. Then I got right back behind the camera and captured the introduction of the wedding party. The ability to capture the smile and the tears on the bride’s face as she entered the room made it all worthwhile. “

How to Write Your Own Vows

No matter what kind of wedding you’re having or how many guests will be attending; the vows are one of the most important aspects of the ceremony. If you’re thinking about writing your own vows instead of going the traditional route here are some tips.

  • Discuss the vows with your partner first- Talking about your vows is the best way to decide how long they will be and whether or not to include personal anecdotes or incorporate religious elements
  • Write your vows in a quiet place and speak from your heart
  • Make a list to decide what you want to include
  • Write multiple drafts
  • Don’t wait until the last minute
  • Find a way to say, “I love you” in your own words
  • Tell your partner you’ll be there through good and bad times
  • Know that it’s okay to ask family members and friends for help
  • Think outside the box for inspiration (i.e. books, music, movies, etc.)
  • Start with standard vows and personalize them
