Course Description: Algebra 1 is intended to build a foundation for all higher math classes. This course will review algebraic expressions, integers, and mathematical properties that will lead into working with variables and linear equations. There will be an in-depth study of graphing, polynomials, quadratic equations, data analysis and systems of equations through direct class instruction, group work, homework, student projects and technology.

Prerequisites: Pre-Algebra or 8th Grade Math

Text/Materials: We will be utilizing the Algebra 1 McGraw Hill textbook for this course. You will be provided with calculators daily and one folder at the beginning of the school year. In addition to materials provided in class, you will need a notebook, a pack of lined paper and pencils. You are required to bring your notebook and the provided folder to class every day. I will keep your lined paper and pack of pencils in the classroom if you choose not to hold on to it yourself. I also sell the following supplies: Folder- $0.50, Pencil- $0.25 for mechanical, $0.10 for wooden, Notebook- $0.50. Optional materials: binder, personal calculator, pens. ***You are required to have these materials by Friday, August 28th (B-Day) or Monday, August 31st (A-Day). You will receive 20 “Rough Rider Points” if you have the materials by this time.***

Means of Evaluation: The focus of this class is mastering the state standards that indicate that a student is ready to graduate from high school. In-class assignments and homework are intended for students to practice the skills necessary. Students will be formally assessed on both skills quizzes and through chapter tests. Grades will be calculated using the following system.

In-Class Assignments (Warm-Ups, Practice work, Exit Slips, Folder Check) *10%

Homework *15%

Quizzes *25%

Tests *50%

***I DO NOT offer “extra credit”!!! Complete the regular credit assignments, and you won’t NEED extra credit!***

***********************************************************************************************************

Grading Scale:

90-100% = A

80-89% = B

70-79% = C

60-69% = D

0-59% = F

Note: All student athletes must maintain a 2.5 (70%) average to play in their respective sport(s).

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms and evaluate algebraic expressions using substitution.
  • Solve one-, two- and multi-step equations and inequalities.
  • Write the equations of lines.
  • Solve and graph linear functions.
  • Solve and graph systems of equations and inequalities.
  • Solve and graph quadratic functions.
  • Solve and graph exponential functions.
  • Simplify expressions involving exponents.
  • Simplify and factor polynomials.
  • Find the mean, median, mode and range of a set of data.
  • Find sample spaces and probabilities.
  • Analyze and display data.
  • Use permutations and combinations to count outcomes.

****All learning objectives and goals are aligned and follow Missouri State Standards and GLE’s********

Instructional Methods: Lecture, group work, independent practice, guided practice, online labs, peer tutoring/teaching, flipped classroom

Technology Inclusion: Technology will be used daily, including, but not limited to, computers and the Interactive Projector for class instruction/student demonstration. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and various websites will be utilized for instruction. In addition to these uses of technology, students will be participating in a “Flipped Classroom” model for a portion of the classes. This will utilize online videos and technology to teach topics to students.

School Expectations:

1) Be in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings.

2) Have paper, pencils/pens, books and all needed supplies every day.

3) Keep hands, feet, books, and objects to yourself.

4) No profanity, rude gestures, teasing, or put downs.

5) Follow directions of the Student Discipline Handbook and all school adults unless the request is illegal, immoral or unsafe.

6) No cell phones in the school building.

Classroom Expectations

  • Each student is expected to follow all school policies and procedures outlined in the student handbook, as well as all the procedures established in Mrs. Bales’ classroom. This is to ensure a positive classroom environment where ALL students can be successful learners.
  • Each student is expected to complete all assignments, quizzes and tests. If the student is absent from class, he or she is required to get any missing assignments or notes or schedule a make-up test with the teacher the DAY he or she returns to class.
  • Students will be given AT LEAST a one-week notice before a quiz and AT LEAST a two-week notice before a test. Students are expected to be IN CLASS on the day of the quiz or test. If the student knows of an absence before the scheduled quiz/test, please inform Mrs. Bales IMMEDIATLEY to make alternative arrangements.
  • After school tutoring will be offered for students starting in September. Students wanting to schedule a tutoring session must talk to the teacher.
  • Each student is expected to work from bell-to-bell. The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell!
