Role:Teacher, Early Years Support Service

Responsible to:Head teacher, Assistant Head responsible for EYSS

Responsible for:Advice on the identification, assessment and educational support of children from birth to 5 years who may have special educational needs.

Main contacts:The Chiltern School, Nursery Schools, Nursery Units and reception classes. Voluntary, private and independent early years education settings. Members of the multi-disciplinary teams at the CDC and the Edwin Lobo Centre. Other professionals.

Job Purpose:To work in partnership with parents/carers, professionals and providers of early years education in order to support children who have special educational needs, as outlined in the SEN Code of Practice. To deliver training and provide professional development relevant to early years and SEND

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To advise and support staff and parents / carers in meeting the needs of individual children with learning needs
  • To undertake detailed individual assessment, as appropriate to support children with SEND.
  • To advise on identification, assessment and support as appropriate.
  • To undertake referral, as appropriate, to other members of the multi-disciplinary teams at the Child Development Centre and the Edwin Lobo Centre.
  • To support early years providers to write and implement personal learning programmes.
  • To support Early Years providers in collating information/evidence for requesting Statutory Assessment.
  • To line manage the support staff within the Early Years Support Team

For children at home and/or attending provisions not required to have regard to the Code of Practice:

  • To undertake, on referral, an initial developmental assessment.
  • To provide home teaching/support as appropriate according to the needs of the individual child.
  • To plan an appropriate programme of support for children on case load, and monitor, evaluate and review as appropriate.
  • To liaise with all other professionals involved with a child to encourage an holistic approach which takes into account the needs of the individual child and the needs of the family.
  • To advise parents/carers of children in settings from the private voluntary agencies/support groups pertaining to their child’s particular area of difficulty.
  • To inform parents of the range of early years education available within the authority.
  • To inform parents/carers of the Stages of Assessment as outlined in the SEN Code of Practice prior to their child transferring to a setting having to have regard to the Code.
  • To discuss with parents/carers Statutory Assessment procedures as appropriate.
  • To write Educational Advice for children undergoing Statutory Assessment.

Other:

  1. To manage Early Years, assessment/teaching groups as required.
  2. To deliver training on a range of issues relating to Special Educational Needs in the Early Years.

Generic Responsibilities:

  • To have responsibility for and manage an individual caseload as delegated by The Chiltern School.
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of the LA Policy for SEND for children of pre-statutory age.
  • To keep a record of and evaluate the effectiveness of provision in relation to meeting an individual child’s needs.
  • To keep comprehensive and cumulative records.
  • To attend Early Years Meetings.
  • To attend staff meetings as a member of the multi-disciplinary team at: The Chiltern School, the CDC and the Edwin Lobo Centre as appropriate.
  • To attend multi-disciplinary case conferences/reviews as required.
  • To respect the confidentiality of all information relating to children and their families.
  • To contribute to the appraisal of the Early Years support staff
  • To undertake any other duties of a similar level and responsibility as may be required from time to time.
