FROM THE MINISTRY TEAM

As autumn approaches and the leaves start to fall leaving a carpet of colour for us to walk on and conkers to collect, the noise from the fields seem to have quietened down. Tractors being driven at all times of day and night gathering in the harvest. It is the oddest thing when driving along a road in the dark and seeing lights coming towards you from what you are sure is a field! It is the busiest of times for our farmers and how grateful we are for the hard work and commitment of those who work on the land bringing in the goods and gifts of creation.

At our Harvest Festival services our churches are decorated with the most wonderful harvest produce from glorious carrots to good old spuds. Also among our harvest gifts are tinned produce and other dry goods that people give so generously. These harvest gifts are distributed to local charities and also baskets are taken to people in our villages. This sharing of gifts is an important part of community life in our villages and I would like to share this poem that uses seeds and gifts of a slightly different sort but that ones that will bring a plentiful harvest.

Prayer Focus for October

This month we focus our prayers on all the changes which October brings. Our little ones begin school, our older ones move to senior school and last years' seniors move on either to work or higher education.

We pray Lord, you will be with them in the 'newness' of it all and with those whose calling it is to teach. We ask you to be with those whose hopes have been dashed and those youngsters without work. We hold them all and their parents and carers, in our hearts. Amen.

A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP OF LINCOLN

One of the highlights of last month for me was licensing Richard Holden as the new incumbent of Skegness. As I arrived for the service, my mind took me back to the ceremony on the seafront that I took part in several years ago, during which I blessed the new flood defences. Those defences are a constant reminder of the power of nature and our own vulnerability in the face of it.

Earlier this year, I was privileged to represent the Church of England at an international consultation on climate change. When I heard that the organisers had chosen Fiji as the venue, my first reaction was a feeling of tiredness at the prospect of such a long journey! Being there, however, was a real eye-opener. It was a fantastically challenging and interesting experience and I was reminded again of the intimate connection between God, humankind and the environment. The fragility of that beautiful part of the world, where climate change threatens their islands and their way of life.

I have returned to the diocese with a renewed sense of the importance of planning and working together if we are to meet the challenges of global warming.

We share with our Polynesian brothers and sisters a real and profound sense of connection with the natural environment, and I hope it will be possible for us to forge links that will enable each of us to learn from the other about caring for this world that God has given us.

A note from the editor: This will be the last edition of the Springline Newsletter I edit. It has been announced that the Bishop of Lincoln will license me as Assistant Curate in the Parish of St Mary Magdalene in the Bail on 21st October 21. Please pray for me in this new adventure. Julia
