Rodiawetlandcenter - AmvrakikosGulf

The Rodia Wetland Centre is situated in the old stone school in the village Strongili, on the boundaries of thePrefecture of Arta and Preveza, on the north-western side of the AmvrakikosGulf. The area which is considered especially beautiful is protected by the RAMSAR International Convention on Wetlands, while recently it was declared a National Park.

The Amvrakikos is Greece’s largest wetland system and constitutes a mosaic composed of lagoons, hygrophilous forests, salt marshes as well as the largest single reed thicket in Greece known as the marsh of Rodia.

In this environment of rare beauty the largest population of birds in Greece (approximately 100.000) winters; it is where about 290 species of birds stop, build their nests and reproduce, while the area is home to Europe’s largest Dalmatian pelican colony. The Rodia wetland is also known for its fish producing capabilities, as well as for being the most important area for eels in Greece. Recently in the same area the water buffaloes that had been wiped out in the 1940’s, returned to their natural environment and were successfully rehabilitated. Their cohabitants are the many species of birds, such as, Dalmatian pelicans, herons, wild ducks, black-winged stilts, kingfishers and marsh predators that give special colour to the natural beauty of the area.

The Rodia Wetland Centre is an initiative for the familiarization and informing of visitors and to heighten their awareness of the natural environment. In this effort of ours we have undertaken some ecotourism initiatives, such as sightseeing tours of the Rodia lagoon and the Tsoukalous Lake with traditional sailing vessels (priaria) or with a larger vessel, providing information on the traditional fishing methods in the ivaria, visits to the Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Rodia, to the fishing cabin as well as informing on the area’s other places of interest, while there is also the possibility of a meal with traditional local foods.

We have prepared some sight-seeing excursions and informational programms that you may include in your activities. For further information and bookings please contact us at the following address and telephone numbers.
