It was a good day at the races for Wesham on Saturday at the Northern Athletics 4- and 6-Stage Road Relays in StanleyPark in Blackpool on a gorgeous early autumn afternoon. The club fielded three women’s and three men’s teams and enjoyed a friendly afternoon of racing witnessing the cream of the north cruising round a 4.8km course for the women and a 6.6km route for the men, both single lap and taking in the undulations of North Park Drive. The Wesham women’s ‘A’ team finished 26th in 1:26:41, 13:23 behind winners Lincoln Wellington, with Helen Lawrenson 45th in 21:55; Nicola Unsworth 36th in 22:23; Emma Pass 32nd with 21:09 and Carmel Sullivan 26th in 21:14. The ‘B’ team clocked 1:39:15 with Sharon Cooper 59th in 23:54; Laura Taylor 50th in 23:14; Tracey Hulme 44th in 23:24 and Sally Deacon 50th with 28:43. The ‘C’ team were 53rd in 1:41:02; Kerry Eccles (63rd, 25:51); Lizzie Jones (54th, 22:23); Fran Hodkinson (54th, 26:38) and Bernadette Dickinson (54th, 26:10). Rob Danson lead out the Men’s ‘A’ team with a scorching run to finish 9th, highest place ever for a Wesham relay run, clocking 20:30, followed by Steve Waterhouse 26th in 22:38,, Simon Denye 36th in 23:52, Steve Myerscough 43rd in 24:48, Lee Barlow 43rd with 23:34 and David Taylor 41st in 23:37, cumulating 2:18:49, 17:25 behind winners Derby AC. The Wesham men’s ‘B’ team finished 85th in 2:40:51 with Alex Rowe 79th in 24:13; Simon Eaton 82nd in 25:35; Mick Edge 91st with 29:31; George Kennedy 88th with 27:24; John Collier 86th in 26:19 and Stuart Topping 85th in 27:49. The ‘C’ team came in 102nd with 3:00:38, comprising Steven Gore (99th, 26:01); Chris Moss (108th, 34:00); Dave Young (108th, 33:08); Alan Taylor (105th, 31:41); alan Hudson (104th, 28:36); and Elliott Costello (102nd, 27:12).

There were a few Wesham runners in the Yarrow 10km Trail Race in Chorley on Sunday, with Paul Hetherington finishing 10th and 3rd M40 in 47:17. The course featured a wet woodland section early on followed by two crossings of the river, the first thigh-deep in water. Carmel Sullivan won the women’s race in 50:48 placing 20th overall. Mick Edge was 43rd in 55:51, 5th M55. Michaela Dempsey was 14th woman in 1:03:02, 5th W45.

Debbie Myescough clocked another personal best performance in the LancasterCastle 10k on Sunday finishing 14th woman and 2nd W50 with 51:43 66th overall. Stephen Wilkinson ran the Sutton Six 10k race on the outskirts of Chester finishing 15th M60 and 178th in 53:48 in a popular good quality race with 52 runners running under 40 minutes.

The Northern Masters staged their Jack Betney Memorial Run on Sunday around the stunning Wayoh and Entwistle Reservoirs north of Bolton on a favourable morning. Alex Rowe finished 3rd around the approximate 10k course in a time of 43:36.

Steve Myerscough ran 19:27 in last week’s Preston parkrun, recording an M40 Age graded performance of 70.69%. Martin Bates scored a new personal best with 23:51 for an M55 66.11%, and Phil Leaver had an M60 performance of 63.16% with a time of 25:50. Julie Rooney ran 32:00 for W40 48.07%. Graham Cunliffe ran the re-vamped Burnley parkrun in TownleyPark, running 23:10 for M55 68.63%, and Steven Gore preceded the Northern 6-Stage with a run of 35:09 supporting his daughter.
