RLBS 1311 A Survey of the Old Testament
Content of the Course
The Holy Scriptures of the Christian Tradition are divided into two testaments. This semester we will engage the first of these testaments, the Old Testament or the Hebrew Bible. The nature of a survey course admits the impossibility of a comprehensive or exhaustive study of the 39 books that compose the Old Testament. Therefore, the content of our course will be two-fold: (1) To gain a general or broad understanding of the “story” presented in the Old Testament, and (2) To critically engage selected readings of Old Testament texts deemed especially important to both the community of Israel and the Church.
Purpose of the Course
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is a Christian University in a Baptist tradition. In earning a liberal arts degree from such an institution, one must realize the importance placed upon the Holy Scriptures of the Christian tradition. The purpose of this course is not merely to examine these texts as ancient historical documents nor simply as religious literature. Certainly both of these aspects of the Old Testament will surface many times during the semester, but the primary purpose of the class will be to read the texts through a “confessional” lens–What are the theological implications of the text for the community of faith (the immediate context pointing to Israel and the extended context pointing to the Church)?
