Rigid Motions Lesson Plan Theresa Anderson

Objectives:

MA.700.10.75 Graph ordered pairs in a coordinate plane using no more than 4 ordered pairs of rational numbers (-20 to 20) * (1. C. 1b)

MA.700.20.65 Analyze a transformation (translation, reflection, rotation of 90° or 180°) on a coordinate plane (2. E. 1a)

MA.700.20.70 Identify and plot the result of one translation (horizontal or vertical), reflection (horizontal or vertical), or rotation (90 or 180 degrees) about a given point * (2. E. 1a)

Materials:

Geoboards

Painted Washers

Worksheets

Direct/Guided Instruction:

Review coordinates by asking the students to place washers on given coordinates and ask for the coordinates of a given point.

Plot ( 5, 4); ( -3, 5); ( 0, 2); ( 1, -4); ( 0, -3)

Ask students to place three washers on three coordinates and what polygon the three coordinates make if they were connected. Explain that if we “slide” the triangle to the right 4 places (units) it would be in a new location. State the original and the new coordinates for the triangle. This type of slide is called a Translation. Repeat with other polygons and slide to the left, right, up, or down and a combination of left/right and up/down. State original and coordinates of translated polygon.

[ Share Teacher Led Resources/ Interactive whiteboard website on Translations]

Ask students to place three washers on three coordinates and reflect it over the x- axis.

Repeat but Reflect over the y-axis. Repeat activity with other polygons and be sure to state the original and the new coordinates for the given polygon.

Explain that the final rigid motion is a Rotation. Be sure students understand clockwise & counterclockwise. Begin with a triangle and rotate it 900. After giving students coordinates for a new figure rotate 1800. Continue to state original coordinates as well as the new coordinates.

Independent Practice:

Students will complete practice worksheets using what they know about Transformations.

Assessment:

Students will show an understanding of Transformations by completing the worksheets with 80% or higher.
