Community police

There is a new type of police officer on our country roads these days. They’re not real police officers. They are members of the public and they are called ‘community police’. The idea is that they help the police control the speed of motorists through their villages.

These people wear yellow jackets and stand beside the road with a traffic gun pointed at the cars to find out the speed. This is not official. There is no camera and the people have to note down the numbers of the cars that are going too fast. This information is then passed on to the real police who send a warning letter to the owner of the car.

Everyone is happy with this scheme! ‘It’s not a good system,’ says Mark Good from one of the main motoring organisations. ‘Mistakes often happen. The people take down the wrong numbers! The information is just not reliable. It’s never a good idea to get the public to do the police’s job. I think it’s ridiculous.’

But, as the villagers say, speeding is a huge problem, particularly in the countryside. There aren’t enough traffic police and dangerous motorists need to be stopped. So what do you think? Let us have your views on the website.

Are the sentences True or False ?

We live in Yorkshire on a farm in the country. The farmhouse is quite an old building. It is about 250 years old. There aren’t many houses near us. There is a pub in the village about three miles away, but we are over twenty miles from the nearest town. That can be difficult for shopping, but we love it here. It is very quiet, there is nearly no traffic and the view is wonderful. Our uncle’s family, however, don’t live in a house or a flat. They live on a houseboat. The boat looks small, but it is quit big inside. Apart from the bathroom, it only has one room, so they have to do everything there-eat, cook, sleep and watch TV.

Read the text, then choose True or False .

On 3rd May 2000, millions of people around the world received an e-mail called ‘I love you’. The e-mail included a document called ‘Love letter for you’. When people opened this document, a virus destroyed hundreds of vital documents on their computer. The virus then sent a copy of itself to everybody in the e-mail address book. The virus infected millions of computer systems across the world. Even computers in the White House in the USA were affected by the crash. The virus eventually caused about 10 billion dollars of damage.

The person who created the virus was probably a brilliant 23-year-old computer student from the Philippines called Onel de Guzman. He has never admitted his guilt, but detectives know that the virus came from his computer. Onel de Guzman was not charged with any crime because in May 2000 the Philippines did not have any laws against computer crime. (They have now!)
