ACTIVITIES

Co-curricular ActivitiesWhile living and teaching in Okazaki, Japan, from August 2007 to August 2008, participated in local taiko group, with the highlight of performing in the cherry blossom festival in April. Was active member of Triangle fraternity of engineers, architects, and scientists from September 2003 until graduation. Acted as house spiritual advisor, helping to improve spiritual health of busy engineers and partying students spring semester of 2007. Led Bible studies for fraternity in fall of 2003. Rang chimes in school bell tower spring of 03. Visiting research assistant at St. Petersburg State University summer of 06, helping build an experiment to study the interactions of hydrogen with steel. Studied student language and culture abroad in Nagoya, Japan, from April to July 2004, participating in the kyu-do- team; Wandervogel, the mountaineering team; and the origami club. Sang in church and school choirs with the highlight of singing at Carnegie Hall on May 29, 2000.

Service/Community ActivityActively involved with Lutheran church, drumming in praise band since summer 2005, singing and lay reading since 1998. Was volunteer assistant in English classes at various high and middle schools in Nagoya, Japan, summer of 2004. Was a black belt and assistant instructor at Lion's TaeKwonDo in Woodridge. Participated in community improvement activities through Troop 5 Boy Scouts, Westmont. Was an intermittent short-term farm assistant (volunteer) at Hoa'Aina O'Makaha, a non-profit organic community farm based in Makaha Valley in Hawai'i.

WORK

9/2008-PresentGraduate student in physics at the University of Maryland at College Park. Responsibilities include leading physics class discussion sections as a teaching assistant and researching with the Physics Education Research Group (

08/2007-8/2008English conversation teacher in Okazaki, Japan for AEON Amity. Although the majority of the students were elementary school and junior high school students, babies and adults were taught as well. Student language proficiency similarly varied, and some bilingual students were also taught.

01/2006-08/2007Research assistant at Army Corps of Engineers ERDC-CERL lab supervised by Dr. Charles Marsh. Researched and ran experiments on solubility and conductivity enhancement of nanoparticles and nanotubes spring 2006. Designed theoretical designs for a ferroelectric–source wake-field accelerator and worked on determining feasibility of device by applying learned knowledge in plasma physics and electromagnetism.

07/2006-08/2006Taught conversational English at Kolbino Finnish Lutheran Church in Russia six hours/week. The class was composed of about ten students who ranged from a fourth grader to working adults.

09/2005– 12/2005Tutor for NPRE undergraduates, answering questions in physics and engineering and encouraging them with personal experience and enthusiasm.

Summer 2005Research assistant at Argonne National Laboratory supervised by Dr. Nachappa Gopalsami, researching and developing methods of using millimeter wavelength RADAR for the detection of trace radioactive substances. Responsibilities included designing and constructing an air tight chamber, creating supersaturation humidities, and analyzing the results.

9/2004- 6/2005Research assistant in UIUC reactor physics group under Dr. Barclay Jones, testing Fortran code to determine its accuracy in predicting reactor boron coolant crud buildup and subsequent impact. During second semester had responsibilities over work of two less-experienced students.

12/2003-04/2004 Research assistant at Argonne IMPACT (Interaction of Materials

with Charged Particles and Components Testing) group

supervised by Dr. Jean Paul Allain, testing materials to use in

EUVL (Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography) for chip production.

9/2002- 6/2004Research assistant in UIUC Plasma Materials Interactions group (Supervisor Dr. David Ruzic), modifying plastics for medical use.

Summer 2002 and 2003As a camp counselor at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center (LOMC), supplemented spelunking, golfing, horseback riding, confirmation (religious training), and outdoor living with Bible studies and activities. Inspired, lead, and effectively taught theology and the benefits of spiritual wellbeing to 1st-8th graders.
