General Job Description
Residential Counselors’ (RC) primary charge is to provide supervision for campers outside of class times and ensure their safety and well-being. RCs supervise campers during meals, free time, special events, and field trips. RCs are expected to assist with pre-session planning and preparation and post-session activities, participate in staff meetings, and lead and organize social and recreational activities for campers. Counselors are expected to serve as leaders, counselors, disciplinarians and role models throughout the program. Counselors are available to the campers and staff 24 hours per day during the camp sessions, except when off duty. Counselors are usually off duty one 24-hour period per session and one day between sessions. During the day when campers are in class, counselors are assigned to daily duties and free time on a rotating basis. The program will provide room, meals, and theexpenses associated with field trips and activities (e.g. Bull’s game, living group activities).
Residential Counselors will be employed June 11-August 5.
All camp counselors and participants live on Duke’s East Campus. Young Writers’ Camp lives in Blackwell residence hall; Duke Action, Duke Math Camp, Creative Writers' Workshop, Duke W.R.I.T.E., 3D Printing@Duke, Leadership in Action Institute, Drones Camp, Duke Constructing Your College Experience, and Duke Biosciences and Engineering Camps reside in Randolph residence hall.
Qualifications:
All candidates must have completed at least one year of college or university education and must have an established record of professional and personal responsibility. Counselors must enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with young people; have the ability to work cooperatively with the counseling team; and be able to plan and lead recreational activities. Experience with young people ages 11-17 is preferred, as is previous camp counselor or residential advisor experience.
Additional requirements:
Applicants who are 21 or older must have a valid driver’s license, submit their driving record and be able and willing to drive
participants to and from special activities in rental vehicles.
Compensation: $2,300 for 7 weeks
