Twenty (20) qualified petitioners are required for a subsection formation. It is suggested that more than the specified amount of signatures be included to assure that all petitioners qualify, thus speeding the processing of the petition.

We, the undersigned, active IEEE members, Graduate Student Member grade or higher, for a minimum of six months, hereby petition for approval to form an IEEE Subsection as indicated above. If approved, we agree to abide by the IEEE Constitution, Bylaws, and published interpretations of policy.

REQUIREMENTS TO FORM AN IEEE SUBSECTION

Upon joining IEEE, members are automatically associated with an IEEE Section. Subsections, a subunit of a Region or Section, are formed to meet the needs ofa smaller group of members locally. Participating in a Subsection provides opportunities, through its many activities to grow, on multiple professional and personal levels.

The petition to form a new Subsection must include items 1 to 5 below. For a simple view of the petition process, a workflow is provided on page 5. Any questions should be submitted to .

  1. Name of the proposed Subsection, which shall be descriptive of the geographical area it will encompass.
  2. Name of the organizer who must be of IEEE Graduate Student Member or of higher grade and must be an IEEE member for a minimum of six months. The organizer shall serve as the interim Chair pending election at a later date.
  3. Signatures of at least twenty (20) IEEE voting members having mailing addresses within the territorial limits of the proposed Subsection. It is suggested that more than the specified amount of signatures be included to assure that all petitioners qualify, thus speeding the processing of the petition.
  4. In lieu of their signatures on the petition, IEEE will accept an email message from IEEE members stating their agreement to the formation. These emails must include the name of the member, IEEE membership number and a brief statement of support of the petition. These messages are to be sent to the petition organizer who is requested to cut and paste the email messages, preserving the email header information, into one document.
  5. The territorial boundaries of the proposed Subsection (country, cities, state/province, postal codes/pin codes, etc.) specifically delineated.
  6. Indication in writing that the Subsection will abide by the IEEE Constitution, Bylaws, and published interpretations of policy.
  7. The Member and Geographic Activities staff will review the petition and work with the organizers to resolve any discrepancies. MGA staff will seek approval of the petition by the Regional Director (or Sect. The Member and Geographic Activities Board approval will follow at its next scheduled meeting.

SUBSECTION ELEVATION

This form may be used to request elevation of a subsection to a section. MGA staff shall provide the petition to the Region Director, who will in turn contact the parent geographic unit (if the geographic parent is a Section),for feedback regarding the elevation. Based on the feedback provided by the parent geographic unit, the Region Director will recommend the appropriate action prior to submission to the MGA Board.

The Member and Geographic Activities Board approval will follow at its next scheduled meeting.
