Explorer Poster Report

History 8, Term 1 Research Project (150 pts)

This is your first major research project, BUT DON’T FREAK OUT!!! This is easy! Just be sure to follow all of the simple directions below. To begin with, you will draw out the name of a major explorer from a box. After everyone has an explorer name you will be given 2 minutes to trade your explorer with anyone in the class who is willing to trade. After the 2 minutes are complete you must research whichever explorer name you have at that time.

  1. Research your explorer by using at least 3 different sources

(2 Web sites and 1 NON-web resource minimum)

  1. Write 1 page of single-space content in 12 point Times Roman font with 1-inch margins. Do NOT copy and paste content from the Web! Write the information in your own words answering the following questions:

▪WHO : The name of your explorer will be the title of your poster.

▪WHEN: Write a paragraph talking about the years of his or her life (when was he or she born and when did he or she die?) and what was going on in the world when he or she was exploring.

▪WHERE: Write a paragraph about where he or she went on his or her voyages.

▪HOW: Write a paragraph describing how he or she traveled and any particular methods he or she may have used to accomplish his or her goals.

▪WHY: Write a paragraph describing what his or her goals were and whether or not he or she accomplished them.

▪WHAT: Write a paragraph about what he or she accomplished.

  1. Your final report will be organized on a standard poster board (22x28 inches) in either portrait or landscape direction. NOTE: Please do not use foamboard or tri-fold posters.

▪Put the name of your explorer at the top of your poster (lettering can be any style).

▪The poster must contain at least 4 pictures of your explorer.

▪You can keep your research content together or cut it into sections.

▪The poster MUST have at least 1 large map showing where the main voyage went.

▪Organize your content on the poster board with additional photos, images, paintings, drawings and maps that are relevant to your explorer.

▪Put your name/period on the lower right-hand corner of the FRONT of your poster.

▪Attach this rubric to the BACK of your poster and

List your resources in MLA format on the back.
