Job Description
REPORTS TO: Senior Resettlement and Support Worker
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: To undertake on-the-job and formal training in order to facilitate the effective provision of Hostel based services
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Undertake training and hostel duties under the direction and supervision of your line manager
- Engage with the training provider and work towards an agreed NVQ
- Participate in the provision of an effective needs-led service for Hostel residents, in line with SPEAR’s policies and procedures
- Participate in daily household chores, including cleaning, washing and health and safety checks
- Actively engage with service users on a day to day basis, contributing to a positive atmosphere within the Hostel
- Maintain accurate records of work undertaken (in the log book and client file notes where appropriate)
- Undertake support planning with clients, utilising shadowing and co-keyworking as directed by your Line Manager
- Participate in the programme of activities, ensuring workshops such as IT training, book clubs, cookery courses etc, work effectively to increase clients’ independent living skills
- Maintain a safe and appropriate physical environment for staff and service users, in conjunction with the Landlords and Health and Safety Representatives
- Encourage and support service users to use local amenities and facilities, such as the gym, library, GP services, education and training
- Participate in staff management and support systems in line with SPEAR’s policies and procedures, including induction and supervision
- Contribute to regular team meetings and handovers, sharing information with the Hostel team in line with SPEAR’s confidentiality policy
- Represent SPEAR appropriately at all times, and work professionally with external agencies
- Liaise and work with all internal stakeholders to deliver an effective SPEAR wide service
- Work to a shift pattern that may include earlies (starting at 8am), lates (finishing at 10pm) and weekend work

- An awareness of the range of issues which may affect homeless people
- The ability to work with people who display challenging behaviour
- The ability to work within a team and on your own initiative
- The ability to relate positively to people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures
- The ability to represent SPEAR appropriately in all situations, and to work professionally with external agencies
- An understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries
- An understanding of and commitment to Equal Opportunities
- An understanding of Health and Safety and an ability to manage the associated requirements practically and professionally
- Effective numerical skills and good communication skills, both written and verbal
- The ability to keep accurate records of work
- Basic IT skills, including competence with word processing and email and the ability to learn how to use new IT applications
- The availability to work shifts, including early mornings, late evenings and occasional weekends
