Recommendation:
That City Council approve the 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant allocations in the amount of $43,000 as recommended in Attachment 1.

Report Summary

  • As provided in City Policy C211C, the Administrative Advisory Committee is responsible to review and make recommendations on applications for Multipurpose Community Investment Grant assistance.
  • At its meeting of March 11, 1998 the Administrative Advisory Committee met to consider the applications and concurred in the above recommendation.

Previous Council/Committee Action

  • At its meeting of December 4 through 9, 1997, City Council approved a single budget item of $43,000 for the 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant Program.

  • Five applications were received from Edmonton-based organizations requesting 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant funding.
  • The Administrative Advisory Committee assessed each organization’s program performance, administrative structure, financial status, demonstrated programming record and evidence of public support for the applicants’ services.

Individual Applicant’s Information

EDMONTON BLOCK PARENT ASSOCIATION

RECOMMENDATION:That a 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Edmonton Block Parent Association in the amount of $4,100.00.

DISCUSSION

The Edmonton Block Parent Association is incorporated under the Society's Act as a non-profit organization and is a registered Canadian Charity. The purpose of the Association is to establish Block Parent homes which provide a safe haven where help is available to children, seniors and others if they are hurt, lost or in danger. As well, the Association educates children about the Block Parent Program and promotes safety in the home and on the street.

The Block Parent Society plans to heighten awareness of the Edmonton Block Parent Association by increasing the number of Area Chairman and Zone Coordinators throughout the City. They supply colouring books, pencils and are producing videos for the Liaison Officers to assist them in their community and school presentations.

THE EARTH AWARENESS SOCIETY OF EDMONTON

RECOMMENDATION:That a 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Earth Awareness Society Of Edmonton in the amount of $2,600.00.

DISCUSSION

The Earth Awareness Society of Edmonton is incorporated under the Society's Act as a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to stage the annual "Earth Day" event. Earth Day world wide is the largest event that takes place annually with no specific religious affiliations.

Earth Day is a constantly growing organization world wide. The event attracted over 13,500 people in 1997 and the Society plans to increase the attendance through growth in community awareness and greater activity.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF EDMONTON

RECOMMENDATION:That a 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Junior League Of Edmonton in the amount of $4,600.00.

DISCUSSION

The Junior League of Edmonton is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The organization’s purpose is exclusively charitable and educational.

The Junior League Of Edmonton leases space from the City of Edmonton at an annual amount equivalent to taxes. The facility, C & E (1891) Railway Museum, located at 10447 - 86 Avenue houses an interpretative museum depicting life in Old Strathcona at the turn of the century. Tours are available at no charge on a year-round basis and used extensively by both Edmonton Public and Catholic schools.

The league is collaborating with Prospect Literacy Association on an early intervention program called “Books for Babies”. They will also be partnering with two new schools for their “Adopt a School Program” which enhances literacy for elementary school children.

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE - EDMONTON AREA

RECOMMENDATION:That a 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the St. John Ambulance Brigade - Edmonton Area in the amount of $4,100.00.

DISCUSSION

The purpose of St. John Ambulance is to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life through training and community service.

The main function of the Brigade is to provide first aid coverage at local public events throughout the community. In 1996 the Edmonton Brigade performed over 30,000 hours of public duty service and the members spent close to 10,000 hours in training.

EDMONTON SAFETY COUNCIL

RECOMMENDATION:That a 1998 Multipurpose Community Investment Grant be awarded to the Edmonton Safety Council in the amount of $27,600.00.

DISCUSSION

The purpose of the Edmonton Safety Council is to create an awareness and provide educational programs on how to maintain a safe environment at home, in traffic, at work and at play. The Edmonton Safety Council offers several training courses, programs, promotions, through the Kiwanis Safety City, and the traffic and bicycle safety program.

The Edmonton Safety Council is putting the finishing touches on the new Kiwanis Safety City Learning Centre. In 1998 the Council will be taking on the new, hands on, training course in personal watercraft.
