RENTAL/RESIDENT’S GUIDE

Welcome to Lieutenant’s Island, one of the most uniquely beautiful locales on Outer Cape Cod. Because of the fragility of this special area, we ask that you kindly consider following these suggestions:

ROAD COURTESY

1.DEPARTING VEHICLEShave RIGHT-OF-WAY over those arriving. Those leavingthe island may have a medical emergency or need to beat the tide. Pull over to the right and wait for the other vehicle to pass, especially if they are already traversing the marsh road & bridge. Allow pedestrians to clear the bridge before vehicles.

2.Most island roads are privately maintained - keep vehicle speed down! There may be children playing or protected species of turtles and birds to avoid.

3.Marsh roads may be submerged at high tide.Consult a tide chart. For every foot over a 10’ tide, plan on the road being submerged for about an hour either side of high. Some tides may be higher than normal due to weather conditions.

WATER CONSERVATION

1.Low volume settings for dish and clothes washers should be used.

2.Low phosphate detergents are a better choice due to groundwater fragility.

3.Flush toilets only when necessary. Use single ply biodegradable toilet paper.

LAND CONSERVATION

1.Due to dune erosion, please use stairs/steps to the beach where available.

2.Town Ordinance prohibits fireworks, bonfires, and camping on the Island without proper permits (check with Wellfleet Fire Department – 508 349 3754).

3.Please keep pets properly supervised and away from protected bird nesting areas. Many local island tidal flats, marshes & beaches are conservation areas owned by Mass Audubon - it’s important not to disturb protected creatures (diamondback terrapin turtles and piping plovers) natural daily lives and habitats.

4.Check yourselves and your pets daily for ticks. Deer ticks (which can carry Lyme disease) are harder to spot than larger wood ticks.

5.Please remove litter and other materials from the beach.

6.Grills, wood stoves, fireplaces, smoking materials, etc -- please do not leave them unattended!!! Island vegetationand homes are very susceptible to the spread of fire, and public service agencies may have trouble reaching us during high tides.

7.Shellfish may not be taken from the local beaches and tidal flats without a proper permit (Wellfleet Shellfish Department - 508 349 0325).
